The
Max Computer Music Workshop (MCMW), led by
Christopher Dobrian (UC San Diego) and
Charles Nichols (VA Tech). An intermediate to advanced one- to two-week immersive workshop, focused on programming and composing computer music in the Max visual programming environment. Participants will learn techniques for programming interactive computer music, culminating in a public recorded performance of works created during the workshop, performed by guest musicians.
Week 1: "Max Programming Fundamentals"
Week 1 may be taken as a standalone crash-immersion course, getting you adept with basic and intermediate interactive Max programming techniques. Most days will incorporate the creation of small practical études.
Week 2: "Computer Music Programming and Composition"
Week 2 is a continuation of Week 1. You will focus on further development of your own Max programming skills and create a piece for performance in the Max Computer Music Concert on the last day of the workshop.
Dobrian & Nichols will present a range of computer music topics, including:
- Digital audio—input/output, synthesis, recording, looping, processing, and spatialization
- MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) data for musical control
- OSC (Open Sound Control) data for communication between devices
