As of apparently a few days ago, the lathe DRO is displaying "Err 1"
instead of working.

There is a battery inside, I opened up the case and it looks quite
corroded. I have ordered a replacement and will fit it when it arrives.

One of the annoying types that are soldered to the PCB, labelled "VARTA Mempac 3.6V"

Might not fix the problem, but the new one was about £4 so I figured it was worth a shot.

Looks like an essential replacement even if it doesn’t fix the problem you were trying to fix.

The DRO is fixed.

I replaced the battery and cleaned the corrosion off the PCB.

After booting up it had lost its config, and by default it assumes the
scales are imperial... it took me over an hour of fiddling with it to
understand how to set it up right. In case anyone needs to do this
again, here's the procedure:

- there is a button on the PCB to enter config mode - while the unit is
powered on (!) open the case and press the button.

- it cycles through four settings by pressing enter, once you reach the
last one it leaves config mode so you only get one chance to set each one

- press "x pre" to select the setting to change, then enter to cycle
through values it accepts, "x pre" again once it's correct

- do the same for Z before moving on to the next setting, it supports
different resolutions per axis

I set scale units to mm and resolution to 0.005, the other two settings
I didn't know what they represent, values were 1.0000 and 9600

Anyway I checked with a caliper and the movements of the carriage and
cross slide both seem correct now. Hopefully this won't need to be done
again for another 25 years anyway.
