Hi team,
my name is syed and I recently joined the hackspace.

I am trying to finish up a project (with the deadline approaching fast), and I desperately need access to the lathe machine. I have been told that there haven't been any inductions for some time now, but would really appreciate any help in this matter.

Due to the lockdown, most machining shops have closed down; and the one that I could find, is charging me 100 pounds for 4 simple bores.

Could someone please help me get access to the lathe (I do have significant experience around lathes, and would thus really appreciate if someone could help me with induction in these difficult times)

Utmost Regards,
Syed

Hi,
A) You just want to bore out a hole in 4 cylinders? Could you give dimensions and what material you are using, presume these four items are ready to go and need no other machining to complete your project?
B) You don't actually mention a date for your deadline, can this wait until 2nd December when we are told that lockdown will end?
C) What is the impact of missing the deadline?

Hello,
Thank you so much for your response. Means a lot.

Actually, I have an online presentation regarding my prototype on the 23rd of November. Thus I need it finished before that. (not having the prototype during the presentation will serious affect the presentation and the project)

And I need to bore out the 4 holes on two blocks (2 holes on each block). I am trying to make motor housings, so it is literally just making two holes on each block, and that's it. (I can share the drawings if you want). I have already done all the other work necessary for the parts, and now just need finish these off on the lathe. Do you think it would be possible for you to help me out please?

Your kindness and support will be greatly appreciated.
Utmost Regards,
Syed

100 quid for this job is really quite reasonable

It would cost most shops more than that to consult with you and set up the job never mind the material and making it

what tolerances, what surface finish what degree of roundness etc etc

Hi Dean,

Yes, Indeed, this is a tedious task for sure. And even if I provided the material, it would still be slightly expensive.
But I have a very limited budget for the entire prototype. Thus, I was hoping if someone could induct me to the lathe, so that I do not end up wasting someone else's time (and save some money)

Would really really really appreciate help at this point.
Regards,
Syed

Can you post your drawings? Got a very rough idea of what you are looking for but thats about it.

Sure...
Here is a link to some snapshots of what I'm after. I already have the blocks, and all I need now is to bore the holes out.

what are the complete dimensions of the cubes? What material do you want to use?

The blocks are 57x57x50 mm each at the moment.
I'm using bright steel.

after facing and boring, the finished block should be 57x57x45mm

So, is there any chance that someone would PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE induct me to the lathe machine? I will need to use it for parts in the future as well.
(give a man a fish, he eats for a day... allow a man to fish, and he will forever be in your debt)

PLEASE PLEASE!
(Sorry for the spam, but it would really help me a lot!)
Regards,
Syed

a few points
Inductions are not happening at the moment - we are in the midst of COVID 2 Lock down
Training to get an un-experienced user up to the standard required to do this job (4Jaw) is likely to cost more than you have been quoted
You have been quoted a very reasonable price - I could not do it for that price and dont know any one that could

Given your drawing I could create what your are asking for out of laminated mdf for you, which will be dimensionally accurate for the holes, and the square of the box along the axis of the bore holes.
Happy to try that for you over the weekend and from your explanation I think that this will sort you out for your demo.

As Dean says we are in the middle of a Lockdown and inductions would definitely break the restrictions and put us into difficulties with our Landlord. COVID has curtailed our activities as much as many other community organisation.

If you want it made out of steel then let me know and I won't go any further.

How ever a laser cut version would work well for a prototype

Agreed, this would be lasercut, and thus should be fine for a prototype which is what I believe is being asked for...

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the suggestions, your support and concern really means a lot to me.
However, this is for a  "works like prototype" where the motors are 3kw each. hence, I specifically chose a strong material.

Also, I am not exactly an inexperienced user in this case. I am a mechanical engineer by profession, (and I used to volunteer at the Royal College of Art's metal workshop, particularly around the lathe machine). The London hackspace still being functional during this lockdown seemed like miracle, and thus I became a member so that I could get access to the machines.

My budget is extremely limited for this phase, and thus, I can not afford to pay anything more than 40 for these parts at the moment. I already have the blocks with me, and was thus hoping if I could get access to a lathe machine so that I could do it myself to keep the budget in control.

Really really looking forward to your help guys.
Utmost Regards and Best Wishes,
Syed

Hi,

Although the HackSpace is classed as open, the journey to HS would have to be deemed essential by the member who would induct you, and the induction would mean meeting with a person from another household inside a building.

It think it is is understandable that members would not wish to perform such actions under the present pandemic circumstances.

Personally I can't offer anything more than I have already.

Thank you once again so much for all your help brother!
(I assure you, it truly means ALOT to me.)

And I would not want to risk you or your loved ones in these tough times, so I shall wait until the end of this lockdown for the induction (and keep searching for alternatives in between)

In today's day and age, it is very rare to find people as helpful as you guys have been, and thus I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Really really appreciate everything you have done,
Utmost Regards,
Syed
