Hello everyone.

In doing my due diligence of being sure of the materials I put under the laser I wanted to check if anyone knew for sure what material the main body of an SM58 is.

From what I've found it's an enamel-painted die-cast metal (http://www.amazon.com/Shure-SM58-LC-Cardioid-Microphone-without/dp/B000CZ0R42).

If this is indeed the case I take it that would work in taking the enamel off, and leaving an etched mark?

Now for the next part - assuming for the moment it is die-cast metal could one of the maintainers tell me if it's safe to engrave this or not pretty please?  I see all metal (except anodised aluminium which I engrave a lot) is on the banned list, I'm hoping it'll be ok to engrave this though?

Thanks, James.

I'm almost certain it's anodised aluminium, but you will have issues etching a non-flat object. You need a rotational axis for it to work.

My thinking was if it was a small enough area it would only be a negligible diference in length away from the laser, but I don't know enough to say that would work, I am prepared to give it a go and if it fails not do it again (if it is indeed annodised alluminium as someone else said they thought it was that too).

Thanks, James.

You'll need less than 2mm variance in height to get good focus, which doesn't give you much space.

That's good to know, thank you!
