Hi peeps,

I've had an epic draught beer fridge at home (two taps!) built on a cornelius system for years. Its pretty good, but recently I've been wondering about the cost of gas.

I get my gas from BOC at the moment and that means I "rent" a cylinder at about 85£/year. The price has gone up every year, too. Despite running it for about 5 years it's only coming to the end of the gas now!

This makes me think I'm getting a rather shonky deal!
What are the regulations on this? Is there somewhere I can just buy my own cylinder and get it refilled? Back when I first got it BOC were the only game in town (as far as I could discern) though there were lots of places in the west midlands etc (too far!).

Has the situation changed? Canhas cheap co2?
thanks geeks: theeks

http://www.londongases.co.uk/browse/cellar-gas

£40 for a new bottle, £20 for a refill, no rental fee, free delivery anywhere in London.

Or, if you are not in London...

They are based in Margate, Kent but have dealers around the country.  I use Stevens and Son near High Wycombe.

They also do Helium if anyone is interested in balloons and various welding gasses.

Hi all just tagging onto this thread with a question of my own: has anyone found a good source for buying Cornelius kegs? Some of the places I've seen are pretty expensive.

Cheers

They're generally pretty expensive unfortunately, and there's no
canonical source of them. Apparently if you keep trawling ebay
sometimes bargains do come up.

There's a shop in Germany selling them for in the region of 40 - 50 euros, second hand and described as being "with dents" as I recall. Not sure if I kept the url.
New the best price I've seen is brewuk, off the top of head they ask £90 for an AEB 19 litre.
If you turn up in person (they're just outside Salisbury) and pay in cash they'll usually do you a ten percent discount, I guess you might want to check that first on larger items where they may not be making much margin. They're good guys - It's been my local brew shop since I started brewing.

Here's that url (still had it open, it turns out)
I have no idea if they are any good, the ones in their picture do look quite battered!
I'm also not 100% convinced that I'm looking at the correct product, so do your own research.
But they are cheaper than I remembered.

Thanks for the link, I'll investigate a bit more. Like you say it's a bit tricky to work out exactly what sort of condition they're likely to be in and what you might need to get in terms of replacement parts. But definitely looks like it might be an option.

In my case (considering getting one or more for the first time) I decided that I'd get myself a new one, it being easier all round.
More expensive for sure, but then if it turns out I don't get on with it then I'm reasonably confident of getting a good resale value in "As new" condition.
