I can't be there either.

Means there are two spaces for people that are interested.

if someone wanted to take one of the free spaces on the blacksmithing class, how would we go about doing it? who would we get in touch with?

Good question.
We'll try to set up some kind of system before the next session.
Tonight went with 3 unfilled spaces...

Ok...

3 people have confirmed their places for blacksmithing tomorrow.

So there are 2 up for grabs...

And no I haven't thought of a better plan than posting on here.

We would need to wear good boots and expendable clothes for this, right? Hmmm i would be interested, but I would have to come straight from work without a change of clothes and I don't think business clothes are appropriate unfortunately. I also could not get there until 6:45 or 7

I'm interested in doing this but not free tonight.

Although on that note, I haven't posted my interest before though so don't want to jump the queue.

It sounds like this is popular. Is it going to keep running indefinately? Can we start to show interest for next week/time yet? A can definitely fill two places next Wednesday if that helps.

Maybe it would be a good idea to make people pay upfront or put a deposit down to reduce dropouts?

Cheers,
Paul

It will certainly keep running if fully subscribed...
Perhaps a wiki page is in order.
In theory it is a course, I originally expected all who started to either stick it out until they became independent, or decide after a taster it was not for them. I am sticking it out and will keep my place until done.
I propose having a list, whereby attendance guarantees a place the following week, and non-attendance guarantees being back at the bottom of the list, unless a private arrangement be made eg to cover in case of emergency.
And yes I think also that paying in advance ie buying a higher place in the list could work too.

Who's interested in coming for this wednesday?

Me, siobhan and  (I think, correct me if I'm wrong)  Tom are going this week
After talking to Ian he's willing to increase the class size to 6 since we tend to end up with at least one not being able to make it and he prefers a class of 5 and if he does end up with 6 he's still got the space.

I'd love somewhere to practice the basic stuff, I'm guessing the kiln isnt hot enough to work small pieces of mild-steel?
Abby left an anvil (somewhere) in the space.

I was considering doing it on our roof at home, but i dont think the people below would like the idea of a 1300c fire on their heads :/

yes, the amount of heat and smoke might upset the landlord more than the welding. Perhaps when the space moves it can get a forge.

it took me about 3 months to cover his basic lessons though I'm not the fastest and even after them I have to ask him a lot of questions.

No, the kiln comes nowhere close. Nor does that anvil, unless you intend using a 2 ounce hammer.

A gas forge would solve the extreme smuttiness problem and is relatively easy to make, and ok for small things.

Still not sure how ‘allowable’ that might be ..

thought with the equipment availible in the space I'd be surprised if a proper forge like his couldn't be made.

Hello Tom!

We've done iron before in the kiln. Just heat it up orange hot, pop the metal in the end and leave it till it gets cherry hot then strike while the iron is still hot :)

We made the crucible tongs for the kiln like this.
That said, these were wrough iron. Not sure if mild steel has some properties that make it less mallable when its red hot...

it's a bugger for getting inclusions and cracks if you try to do too much at cherry rather than yellow.

Are you sure it was wrought iron? Wrought iron is only workable when yellow-hot. Mild steel is workable-ish (ie doesn’t crack) down to cherry-red, but really we want yellow in order to seriously reshape it. Presumably the tongs were mostly a bending job.

Are you still up for it Mark?

And are we sure John is not? I can email him directly if in doubt..

I will be coming, and I’ve edited the wiki accordingly.

I'm interested in coming along this week.  Should I rearrange the wiki page?

Did the welding upset the landlord? What did they say about it?

no idea, I was just told that many of the things in the space like the gas cannisters and other heavy duty cutting, welding etc equipment being used by amatures next to piles of wood, plastic, cardboard, paper and cans of solvent makes the building management slightly uncomfortable.

I don't imagine a forge would make them feel better.

Me and siobhan won't be able to make it next wednesday.
I thought I'd be able to but it turns out I can't: I've emailed Ian.

so there's quite a few spaces next wednesday.
