OK, as a few ppl are having trouble seeing the 'stratasys corner' thread, thought would bring here, also to discuss the mod to remove the existing electronics (bulky, not energy efficient and old) with a modern set like the http://shop.seemecnc.com/RAMBo-All-In-One-board-by-UltiMachine-RAMBO.htm

or something a little more beefy. this then means that anyone can then use the Stratasys instead of using that noisy server I rigged up.

This will entail just taking the tech out from the top of the machine, not to hard as I've done it twice already to maintain the damn machine anyway. the steppers and all mechanical components are in perfect condition and salvageable  the extruder itself will need to be replaced which I think will be easy enough too, a nicely made/configured wade extruder or something like this, http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:22980, would do the trick with two ubis (http://printrbot.com/shop/ubis-hot-end/) hot-ends would be lovely too and easy to do. We could have the extruders in the back of the machine with the spools and just the hot ends on the printer arm to save on space.

GO!

will bletchley park still want it after it's been modernised?

Some additions;
Maybe adding on-board computing as well? I've got a couple of old 1Ghz
single-board computers, or maybe we could go the Rasp Pi route. Either
way, making it more self-contained.

Also, since this is more of an industrial level machine, it feels a bit
of a bodge to use printed parts in the extruder. How about we get Billy
to cast up aluminium copies of the printed part in his bucketforge? The
3-in-1 is basically functional again, so finishing the parts doesn't
seem like it'd be a problem.

I like the idea of space-saving on the print head. Gives the option of
adding more nozzles at some point, and possibly increasing both speed &
accuracy due to lower inertial mass.

Sweet suggestions, there is easily enough space in the top once the electronics are removed for a mother board.

Instead of casting, we could use a members CNC machine to mill them out.

There is so much torque and power in the steppers weight isn't a problem to speed it up, it was just that the original extruders were so slow.

We are modding it so Bletchly Park wont need it, that was only if I couldn't get it working again.

Mathew Israelsohn just gave me an insane idea too, (which i'm gonna do) build a 3D scanner into it too, there is enough space if electronics are gone.

Does that make it a replicator?

If my CNC setup was finished, you could use mine, no probs. Who else has
a working setup?
Tho this should be simple enough that we don't actually need it to be
CNC'd. Could be done by hand.

I think I've seen inside the top of the machine. IIRC, strictly speaking
it wouldn't need to be a mini-motherboard up there, would it? Probably
fit a whole desktop size one in there.

I'd love to participate to this project and I can donate a P4 mini-itx mobo with ram and maybe power supply and disk (if I can fish them out of the attic)

Cheers
