Laser Cutter - Engraving

Hi All, 

Has anyone tried to use teh JustAddSharks to engrave a gradient vector image? Or does it work just as well with a JPG?

I think you’ll need to use a vector image. Suggest you import the jpg to inkscape and convert to vector image in there

Would I need to set separate engraving pattern setups? Or does the laser cutter know to engrave at different powers based on the vector?

I know there is another option for engrave (cant think of the name) is this the setting? Or would I need to work out each gradient and then set its power for engraving?

Assuming you are still using the leetro controller then it can't do grey scale engraving, IE it can't change the power of the laser as it goes. You can load a mono colour bitmap file in tho which we have done for maps and old Victorian prints.

What I’m looking to do is a small Xmas bauble for my nice on laser ply with engraving.... like the one attached.... but need to see her in the gradients

You can create the appearance of greyscale by dithering the image before uploading it to laser cut. There are some previous results and incomplete instructions on the wiki page: https://wiki.london.hackspace.org.uk/view/Laser_Cutter/Instructions/Photo_Engraving

There aren't any, you have to dither it as a bitmap first - 1 bit bmp ideally.
Then engrave will do it, ie cut where black not where white.
It will attempt to do it if you give it colour or grayscale, but it will not come out right; the on/off threshold is a hard stop somewhere in the shade range.

Yes I should have mentioned… I have generally found that the typical settings for engraving a solid design are a bit harsh, so maybe start lower. Experimentation/testing absolutely required…
