So, I've been thinking about this for a while and Im wondering if there is any interest in starting a London Graphics Hackspace, in a similar manner to the London Music Hackspace. There was interest in OpenGL a while ago and there are people talking about OpenCV, Computer Vision, Z-Brush, 3DS Max etc. I'd like to learn more and contribute more as its kinda what I do day-to-day and for fun.

Im wondering if we start with a monthly thing in september if there is interest, built around a couple of talks and maybe a workshop thrown in; effectively 2-3 hours in the quiet room. I know we have a lot on in the hackspace these days so I might have to see if we have any space but I'm keen for this to happen. If you think its a cool idea, do let me know. Going to wait till EMFCamp is over first though :P

Cheers

Its an area I would love to know more about, hearing from real people rather than googleing is always more fruitful, I would be interested!

I think I'd be interested. I do a fair bit of pottering around with 3d stuff and I'd welcome an opportunity to learn from others.

I'd be interested in anything that gets me learning more programming

This could be very interesting. I have some interest in 3d graphics, but my girlfriend is an aspiring Maya animator. She's trying to get a job as a runner with a studio right now. Something like this could help get her interested in the space and maybe provide an opportunity for networking. I'm sure she would love to meet and discuss 3d animation with people in a hackspace environment.

Cheers,
Troy

Vaguely related, but I'd be interested in learning a Linux-friendly 3D CAD system (if one exists) with an eye to having some stuff CNC'd/3d-printed.

Might also be worth talking with the V4 Wednesday group (
http://www.v4wednesday.com/ ) who do vvvv presentations / clinics etc.

I'd be interested in this. It's been a long time since I have used any actual software for creating stuff.

If there's anything I can do to help, please let me know.

I'm looking forward to this!

I'd be interested in learning how to do more complex stuff with
software, rather than with paint. I might have to dig up an
absolute-basics (or, Beyond Inkscape) thing first though.

Im hoping it will be a cross between using applications like Blender and Inkscape and similar, but also a heavy emphasis on OpenGL/GLSL, effects and shader programming and computer vision as well. Generally, I'd like to keep it "visual meets tech" and then get a load of speakers to come and present, probably followed by pizza and maybe a training session on something, like "Basic OpenGL" or "learning Blender" or "Getting into OpenCV" etc. Stuff like that. I've been asked to do a series of workshops on OpenGL in the past so I may start there and then get people along to do other things :)

I'd be very interested in this.

I work with Maya at my day job so maybe I can contribute a little.

That'd be great. I think a good mix of graphics is the thing to do :)

At the risk of Bikeshedding, im thinking this would be monthly to begin with, in which case I'm tempted to go for a Friday night as other nights are booked at the Hackspace mostly (and Monday nights would suck!)

sounds good, would be interesting to do some kind of intro demo for EMF camp, something to make us look cool before the opening talks, I'll probably be working on something like this anyway, but if you guys got any ideas, I'll be there
