Dear London Hackspace Team:

Hi, I'm a new member. My university instructor recommended Hackspace, and it's an incredible place. However, I'd like to discuss something with the staff. If I've already received extensive workshop training at my university and can provide supporting evidence, can I use some equipment directly? For example, if I've completed large-scale laser-cutting training at university, can I use the equipment directly? Or do I also need to train in both space and laser?

Best Wishes
Jiemin

You have to have an induction. It's the time when we tell you all the specifics of our particular equipment as well as how to politely cooperate with other users. The actual training given is quite a small part and only helps with basic operations - what you already know is what everyone else has to learn slowly by experience.  Your existing experience will make you much more productive though, and the induction is very quick.

The same goes for the other machines that require an induction - the exceptions are machine tools where the induction is really an evaluation, because training is a long process.

Dear Adrian and Hackspace Team:

Thank you very much for your answer. I understand the importance of training, but we're currently in a situation where we need a very simple lazer cut file. This is an urgent project, but it's very simple. We're wondering if anyone on-site could assist us quickly with the cut, or if we could have someone help us complete it. We're very willing to pay more for this. (I've seen some processes in London Hackspace that require training or additional manpower, which require fees, and we are happy to pay the additional labour costs for the community.)

Also, when I looked up lazer cut training, I saw that it's only offered in August. The wait seems a bit long. Getting help today would be very helpful.

Best Wishes

Hi,

I don't know what gave you the impression that laser cutter inductions only happen in August, but it's completely wrong. Laser cutter inductions, like all inductions, happen throughout the year whenever there is a confluence of a maintainer with the time and enough people interested in one who can attend an induction at that time.

I will probably do one fairly soon since there seem to be a few people interested lately.

As for your urgent project, what material is it and how much cutting is there to do?

regards

Jonathan
