can anyone recommend a reliable VPS hosting (managed) including cplex
control panel, php, mysql etc.

I am using hostgator at the moment which is good, but in the usa. Is
there a good UK or european host. I am using a database with about 500
wordpress blogs on a multisite install so its better if the host
doesnt cache the pages (i think some hosts like "daily" cache pages
from what ive read so far?) Ive tried a test, shared hosting on 123
reg but its unreachable a lot of the time and very slow.

It has to be managed as I am not savy enough to set up apache and php
etc from scratch myself.

Hostgator works out at about 22 pounds for a managed VPS - so
something similar would be good.

Please update our experimental "providers" page with your findings:

Hi,

I use Idaq (www.idaq.com) for all my hosting needs. I have had co-located, VPS and Managed Servers with them.

They are big enough to offer a good and reliable service but small enough to care about the smaller clients.

Yiannis
P.S. I do not work for them and I am not their agent. I am just a happy customer.

Seems like it would be a good idea to get a hackspace dedicated server. I have a couple of projects that need hosting and if we charged £50 a year to host a domain we would only need 10-15 accounts to break even.  If there is enough interest we could either offer cheaper accounts or make money for the space.

T,

If you want a server and think people will be interested, then I
suspect a pledge page for the full amount would make better sense. I
used to offer hosting in this way, ~50/60 a year for website hosting
and then ~40 per month for each shoutcast stream that I hosted.. Sure
it paid for the server, but a serious pain in the back side, and if
it's anything like the rest of hackspace - it won't be reliable anyway
:P

I wonder if a 1/2u chassis with a bunch of Atom systems inside,
networked together with a switch, would stay within colo power
constraints and be suitable for creating a multi-purpose without
having to stay within a virtual machine.

Regards,

Be aware that the sysadmin on that sort of system can be a real pain.
Either you allow everyone to admin, which can lead to chaos, or
restrict admin access which leads to a support burden and frustration.
Personally I'd not go back to shared colo: it's more trouble than its
worth. A VM per hacker is much more sustainable IMHO.

Set up a Hackspace dedicated server which has members' VMs on it? No idea how hard that is to maintain, mind.

we have the servers to do this, should we decide to do it...
vm's would probably be the way to go the problem would be the connection
to the outside world imo

I'm considering getting a 1/4 rack - so could potentially offer cheap
server hosting, as long as the power usage is low.

It would be in Manchester though
