The vacuum gauge on the degassing chamber is looking a little worse for wear (face place missing, inner face bent, needle bent so that it doesn't bash the plate) and while it seems to turn it doesn't point at an anything sensible.

Does anyone know if there's a spare gauge kicking round or have any advice on acquiring one that's actually worth acquiring?

The gauge is old and is only a broad pressure indicator, so as long as
it's still moving it's probably not worth replacing. At least not until
we can get a new degasser built. And we still don't have a proper
diameter chamber to replace the stolen one yet.

It does still move. Are there plans for a larger one? So far this one has worked fine for me. I've been using the pump that sits under one of the lathes.

Broadly yes. I need to make a new one for myself too, so was going to
make a new one for the space at the same time.
Still requires an old gas cylinder with a 12" outer diameter though, and
none have come up in recent wombling. One of them plus 60 in seal,
perspex & fittings gets a nicely sized chamber.

The old one has a seal which looks like it's been poured in place. I have sufficient silicone and polyurethane that could be used for that purpose for a new one. It is about the right level of hardness.

Seeing as the current degasser works, that solves the degassers all the way down problem for making the seal.

Yes it is. And the flange that holds it is an old pie-tin that's been
cut with tin-snips & glued in place. It breaks away frequently from the
downward force of atmosphere. I made that chamber. It's a spectacular
piece of shit and I can make far better now.

If you really want to cast a new seal on a bigger one, you'll have to
use a mould release as silicone can fuse to the exposed steel grain.

But mostly, making a clean cut & using a 30 edge-seal seamed easier &
cheaper than having a wide enough flat facing flange machined to fit the
chamber and welding it both flat and pressure-tight.

Incidentally, I now have an HD video camera, so will soon be pressing on
with on-camera building my new personal vac-chamber. If the space would
like a replacement, I'll need parts to materialise soon.

Hell, even an old aluminium pressure-cooker would make a better one (my
current benchtop chamber option).

Cheers

Found an measured them. They're perfect! One for degassing, one for a
bell-jar! Stuck a DNH label on each and covered the whole lot with a tarp.

Will check current seal prices to move ahead with this. Will try and get
a lift to the space to collect them by car. Do you know the connector
type they take? I'd like to fill them with water& bleach before cutting,
for safety.
