to London Hack Space

Hi.

I'm Martin, a member of the San Francisco based hackerspace
NoiseBridge, and founder of a new hackerspace in Austin. I've
received an invitation to talk at a conference in London very last
minute ( Jan 29-Feb 2 ), and have discovered that impromptu
accommodations in London are hideously expensive.

By way of introduction, I'm a CS and EE who likes to work on CNC
projects. Lately I've been working on designing a new ARM Cortex-A9
multicore CPU and porting Linux to it, improving the MakerBot by
increasing it's speed and resolution, and founding a new hackerspace
in Austin TX ( http://www.austinhackerspace.org ) and working on
Arduino based projects like my HackTheBadge ( http://www.igotu.com/hackthebadge
).

In the past ... I've been responsible for the design of the network
and systems infrastructure that runs Slashdot, Freshmeat, and
Sourceforge doing network ops and programming for Andover.net and VA
Linux Systems and working on the Beowulf project at Penguin
computing. Fun stuff!

So, being in a bit of a bind .. I'm reaching out my fellow hackers in
London. I'd love to spend some time hacking with people at the
London Hack Space .. and am seeking a bit of crashspace during my
short London stay.

I wish I could help , but I'll be away (and in any case an hour's ride outside london so not a great choice). But if you do have trouble finding somewhere, I highly recommend Backpackers - all the ones I've stayed in have been friendly, fun, cheap, and usually have free wifi etc. I prefer them to hotels.

Example (I haven't actually stayed at this one but it looks pretty typical).

Or try the St Christophers Hostels - they're cheap and fun

Unfortunately, being born in 1972, most hostels are not an option for me.

Is that your preference or do you feel you'd not be welcome ?

I was born in 1959 - I've only been using Backpackers for the last 5 years. Prior to that I'd usually use youth hostels which, when they're not restricted to school parties, tend to have a very wide age range indeed. Backpackers have the advantage that they're very light on rules, and don't have school parties.

You might well find a few people who'll only talk to other 20-somethings, but I think travellers are a lot more tolerant than clubbers. I've especially found the european groups willing to share and chat (and I'm not someone who's good at smalltalk).

Of course, you've got to be comfortable with shared accomodation and a student-level mess everywhere. If you've become accustomed to corporate entertainment you might find it a bit of a culture shock :-).

I was not aware. The last time I wanted to use a hostel (Wiesbaden and
Berlin), I was firmly told that "Hostels are only for people under 30."
I found this to be the case at a couple other locations while I was
traveling and so I just stopped even trying.

Not in England. Even the YHA 'Youth Hostels' have no restriction on age.

But thanks - I will keep that in mind if I go to Germany!
