Hi all.

I'm working on a birthday present for my other half. As part of this, I need to get hold of a tritium sphere. These were available but all the sources I know of seem to have dried up.

Does anyone know where I might get one, or have one they are willing to sell? I would prefer green (since it is brightest) but at this point, any colour will work.

For those of you who haven't seen them, tritium vials are a plastic container filled with tritium gas, with a phosphorescent coating on the inside. Tritium is radioactive (and completely safe) with a half life of 12.5 years. The decay of this charges the coating so it will glow for decades. Extremely cool, and exactly what I need for a very unique gift for a very unique lady.

Hopefully someone can help.

Oddly I've never seen spheres. There's a few dealers for the vials though.

I feel I should give the warning that the glow from them is very faint, only really able to see it in complete darkness. The photos found online are long exposure which exaggerate the glowing properties. Conventional glow in the dark items glow much brighter.

I have this place in my bookmarks but I've never used them... this the only non-vial they have and it may not even be in stock anymore. http://www.mixglo.com/tritium-products-other-than-key-fobs.html Again, I've never used that seller before but I picked it up along my travels across the internet as they sell some interesting very tiny ones which would be nice to incorporate into jewellery.

There are tritium lamps available for map reading purposes, they are round and come in a rubber case. They are bright enough to, err, read a map by :) I think they are made by Saunders-Roe.
I

http://www.betalight.nl/en/light-source.html shows some spheres. Dunno what the cost would be but if she is as special as you say, no price is too high :)

The Saunders-Roe where my my doped Princess flying boat wings, that folded in 1964? They may be a little dim now...

Keep in mind even if tritium is sold in key chains and stuff and is considered "safe" it still creates "breaking radiation" in the form of low energy xrays. This video is an excellent example, it's a little slow but very informative.

I would be a bit careful with tritium especially if someone is going to carry it on them for long periods of time.
