I came to an Open Evening recently at London Hack Space, and spoke to Matt about running a sewing workshop, and am now putting my suggestion in writing.

Suggested dates: Afternoon Workshop : 2 – 5 pm

Saturday 14 July (I would prefer this date.)

and/or Saturday 1 September.

Number of participants: 12 (6 could be members of London Hack Space, and

the other 6 would bring myself.)

Workshop Content:

Workshop would be run informally, with participants saying what they would like to do, including:

· basic sewing skills

· alterations

· repairs

They could learn: how to use a sewing machine; how to do basic hand sewing -- backstitch, sewing up a hem; altering clothes to make them fit; repairing items that have a rip or hole in them. They could also talk through sewing projects they are thinking of doing, and look at how to make a garment from a paper pattern.

Use of your facilities:

Space: I would use your workshop room. Could participants also use computers to look up information on sewing websites? Participants could use kitchen to make refreshments, and pay a donation for this.

Equipment: I will bring my own sewing machine and sewing kit. I have tried using your own sewing machine and it does not work.

Cost: Matt said that if members of the Hack Space were interested in this, and they formed half of the group, then there might be no charge for using the space. I would recruit the other half, and I would charge them a fee to attend.

Would members of the Hack Space be interested in this idea?

Best wishes,

Emma

According to the calender (https://london.hackspace.org.uk/events/), 14th July is when the lockpickers will be using the quiet room so it will probably be a bit too busy for that day.

I have a pile of clothes needing repair. Improving my skills will
help.

Sound interesting.

The last time I used a sewing machine was in the 20th century, it is about time I got
a refresher course!

If you haven't already, you may want to check http://wiki.london.hackspace.org.uk/view/Guides/Planning_an_event

I guess you just need to announce it now and get someone to mark it in the calender

Dear Hackspace Members,

Thanks for your enthusiasm.  I would like to go ahead to book Saturday, 1 September, 2 - 5 pm for this workshop.  I could not get into your Calendar. Is this OK?

It was suggested that if, say, 6 Hackspace Members were interested in this, I might pay no fee to use the space; I would bring with me 6 other people who would be paying me to do the workshop.  Is this also OK?

I suggest the first 6 people who replied, be the people who come to the workshop.  Clare, thanks, I have another person who is coming to work with me on this: but do you want to be there to help/participate?

If this workshop is a success, I am happy to do some more.

Many thanks

Emma

Um... But... that clashes with EMF Camp. That's probably a problem for
some people.

Not sure who suggested that to you, but in case you hadn't already discussed it with the trustees, according to http://wiki.london.hackspace.org.uk/view/Guides/Planning_an_event "if you plan on charging attendees then we would appreciate a donation to the London Hackspace for the use of our facilities".

Dear Monty,

I originally came into the Hackspace and spoke to Matt who suggested I do it this way.  I am now not able to go ahead with this proposal, so withdraw my suggestion for the workshop for 1 September.
