Any chance we could hurry this along a bit, when the quiet room is busy it makes it really hard for people with long legs when there are giant servers under the table.

Wondering what the situation is with the auction, as I am in a good position to start making use of the extra resources a server would provide.

I'm interested in one of the 128 gb biggies for a data crunching project

WRT the Suns, theres no bids yet... WRT IBMs we're sorting out what we have. Simon wants to use 2 of them to virtualise for in the space.... so that leaves us with 2 IBMs left, and we're just sorting out the RAM. Machines 6 and 12 IIRC are the 2 IBMs that will be available.

People are now bidding higher values after the event e.g  Bid 14.  However, I don't think this should be an allowed bid, as it is after the auction time ended.

I'd like to mop-up the rest of the Suns for GBP 50 or similar price
unless anyone wants them for more worthy causes (by all means, I will
step back).../me has checked - four free now, editing the wiki now.

This list is definatly wrong (which is why i started the 2nd table on the
wiki), the machines arn't labeled as to which is which anyway. We'll need
to get the machine that went to emfcamp back as well.

P.S. to those of you bidding £50 on these things : you are taking the
piss! - look on ebay for machines with the same specs to see what they are
worth...

I think we should ebay the lot, unless someone has a compleling use for
one of the for a cause the hackspace would like to support, and i've not
seen one so far...

P.P.S. we need to reset the ilom/ipmi stuff as well, it tries to
talk to there previous owners networking stuff!

To save others time...that's true based on listed prices - they are in
the 2-4000GBP depending on specs (that are a bit better spec'd than
the ones in the Hackspace, but not by thousands of pounds)...however a
search for completed listings shows nothing selling at those prices...

I agree that seems the best use of the kit, as there have been no bids
in the thousands. I'll withdraw my bids.

Hadn't spotted the cut-off, so my bad on #14 - my apologies! Feel free
to ignore it unless it's helpful not to.

As for the eBay route - I think that's a good approach for the space if
someone's up for doing it. Space members (for the most part) are
unlikely to be able to provide competitive bids against eBay purchasers
so it will probably produce more funds to the space - £50 bids on stuff
like the 128GB RAM boxes is rather taking the mick, mind you. I'd
rather give the space some cash for the machines than see them binned
for taking up space, though, and if memory serves it was a lot of
effort to get the last server auction organised and done.

The completed listings not showing anything will be due to running
costs - most of these boxes draw in excess of a kilowatt under load,
which is about 3-4 times what even fairly cheap similarly powerful
machines will manage these days. No commercial outfits want to run
these so the only people buying them will be hobbyists, edge-case
commercials/non-profits (people with free electricity) and that's about
it. The last auction had much more reasonable machines which do
actually sell fairly regularly on eBay - these are all fairly
large/specialist boxes.

If an eBay auction can be done then it'll certainly benefit the space
as a whole more, excepting in the cases where projects aim to help
members (ie the virtualization projects etc). I'd rather see something
akin to the last auction where HS members got first dibs then the rest
went to eBay. Seems like the best of both worlds.

Cheers,
James Harrison

To further Jasper's point, people "bidder" for these machines should note that all proceeds will be going directly to the Hackspace; thanks to efforts of Simon (as well as a few others). By not providing reasonable donations for the value of the hardware you trying to claim you are severely depriving the Hackspace of much needed monies that would allow us to move to a larger location. For further details please check out The LHS' Cost of Hacking http://londonhackspace.github.com/propaganda/posters/cost-of-hacking/

After discussing with Simon, unless there are any decent projects looking for the hardware, we'll be putting the servers on ebay, as this is the best source of income for the space.

If you have any worthy projects you feel could use the server then feel free to email me directly, and it'll be discussed with the relevant people.

If the hivemind decide these are good for ebaying/the space (I'd think
they were) then I've got a ZipCar membership and can get a van to move

One side effect of clearing out the emfcamp storage is that we'll have a
rack in the space, so if we can hang on to it until we get into unit 22
(if thats happening) we can rack up all the smp enabled ibm's and connect
them up and then have a very big machien to play[1] with :P

[1] and run up the power bill.
