Hi all,
I was a member of the old Hackspace back in Hackney.
How much appetite is there for a space in Hackney these days?
I ask because an established co-working / maker space in Clapton is closing down and in need of new ownership and members - it has lots of the same stuff the old hackspace had - laser cutter, CNC, 3d printer, sewing machine, vinyl plotter, electronics equipment, kitchen, plus a ceramics workshop and a much bigger woodworking shop. There's potential for all the equipment to stay.
There are also a lot of desks. Under the previous ownership it was functioning somewhere between a maker space and a more conventional co-working space, with permanent desk workers paying £270/month and other users paying £90/month plus some modest usage fees.
New owners of the space could of course operate under a different model in future but those figures are probably a good estimate of where it would need to be starting off to cover rent and bills, and many of the existing users (like me) would be on board from day 1 if the new owners offered similar terms.
Obviously this is a lot more expensive than Hackspace, but still cheaper than comparable facilities in North East London.
A few existing users of this Clapton space have stepped forward with different ideas for how to take it over. Input from any current or former trustees who might want to get involved in this new space would be helpful. It would also be good to hear from anyone who might be interested in becoming a member.
This is all happening very soon so if you are interested, please email me, and I'll send you some more details and put you in touch with the relevant people!
Thanks,
Joe
