Hi all,

This afternoon we were on our way to the Hackspace and upon our arrival my girlfriend managed to drive the car into the back gate. Even though I was sitting in the passenger's seat, I have no idea why and how she managed to do this. This gate is bent a bit but it is still opens and closes. I think it is possible to straighten the bent pieces so that everything falls into place again. Is there anything we can do to help fix this? We're more than happy to get this sorted ASAP.

She left her contact details and our car registration details with one of the trustees who was present in the space at the time.

Please get in touch with us if there's anything we can/should do.

Kind regards,

Filip

I posted these in IRC but thought it was worth sharing here.
The gate looks pretty busted up.

The gates are bowed out because the center uprights are distorted (+ the side bits to an extent) - I'm not sure how repairable it is.

I know this isn't really very helpful but....

LOL! Seriously. how?

But if at all possible don't claim on her insurance as that is often financially punishing come the renewal, most of the cash going to insurers, tons of paperwork.  Work out a sum that she just pays in cash.

Looking at the pix, the gatepost was already broken (it has been held in place by its own weight since we moved in...) and the gates will most likely bend back. I will have a go in the morning if noone has got to it first. Don't get your insurance co. involved unless you have to, they have a habit of increasing premiums even if they slide out of paying a claim. (Yes, technically one should inform them but really....)

This on top of the recent security breaches would seem to make this a
good opportunity to raise support for the pedestrian-access gate idea again.

I totally agree with Phil, and it also looks like the person who'd taken these photos is trying to have this blown out of proportion unnecessary, and using evidence from what was obviously previous old damage, this is nothing myself and Phil couldn't handle and with a bit of welding here and there too, the gate looks pretty fine to me and its closing a lot better then it did before, and far from being busted all up.

Thanks Scooby.

+1 to the idea of fitting a pedestrian gate and sorting this all out properly

Please don't be ridiculous, the pictures were supplied because none were
originally. One picture shows old damage to gauge wether it was made
worse by this or not, the others show the damage to the gates. Having
been there last night when this happened they certainly _do not_ close
better than before. They're pretty bent out of shape and will not close
flat. The only one attempting to fan the flames in this thread is you, I
suspect because Lex gave an accounting of your behaviour in the other one.

Doesn't look too bad. Thanks for the quick update to the list.

Lets wait for the metalbashers to have a look.

Also +1 on the pedestrian gate if there's significant work to be done.

Now that the weather is picking up getting a proper gate would be good..

I'd be happy to help with the metal bashing side..and I'd hope some of the other metal bashers would lend a hand too,

What about the power/data for a card reader etc..if we are going to do this we should have a proper doorbot..

Hi all,

We'd definitely prefer to not involve our insurance company, except if the Hackspace trustees decide otherwise.

We're more than happy to help with fixing the mess we made. Unfortunately we are only available on weekends since we both work full time. It'd be great if one of the trustees would get in touch with us to tell us what the next steps are in resolving the issue. If you require further contact details (phone numbers, addresses,...) please e-mail us on filip.s...@gmail.com or petra.s...@gmail.com.

regards,

F

If I recall correctly the pedestrian gate was to require running power
and data down the side of the yard to have it fitted in the corner where
the scrap wood pile had been. Plus camera, spotlight, etc.

I also recall that fitting an electronic lock to the vehicle gates
wasn't viable because of the nature of those gates. It doesn't sound
like the repairs now needed to the gate will change that. However I do
wonder if it would be possible to fit it with some sort of sensor to
detect whether it's been left open or not.

The last obvious thread about it was in November 2014. I was sure there
was discussion since though about materials having been bought.

Does anyone know what caused the project to apparently stall?

I think what was said, was, we didn't want to be spending money on a site where we cannot remain (it was stated that it's not believed the landlord is happy with us having another lease after our current one is up), but no reason why was given.

Not so.
It has the support and we have the cash to cover it; it hasn't happened because no one has done it.
Anyone wishing to contribute practically please speak up on the Infrastructure IRC channel or ML.
