We have a few servers left around the hackspace from the hardware
auctions last year. These are in working condition.
If anyone is interested in taking these, feel free to have them at no
cost (or just a notional donation). We will probably list them on
Freecycle in a few days time.
Additionally there are a bunch of hard disks of varying sizes (7GB to
400GB). We would like to give these away in return for a donation of
what you feel they are worth, for reference the larger ones are worth
around 20/each. If there is little interest in the smaller ones then
these could be recycled for parts.
Let me know if you have any questions or ideas.
Thanks,
Robert
That would be excellent if you are interested in doing that.
One thing you might find useful is the eBay Turbo Lister if you plan to
do a lot of them.
Robert
Also might be good to keep some around if there's any match sets, in
case we want to set up or demo a RAID system?
Sci
We dban-ed all the disk drives, they are safe to sell or give away. The
reason we did not supply them with the servers is that there was no
motivation to do so.
> Also might be good to keep some around if there's any match sets, in

The only ones really suitable for RAID are the 400GB Seagate drives,
which we have over 20 of, or the 400GB WD drives, which we have over
10 of.
Perhaps we should keep a few sets of these around, as some useful
application is bound to come up for them at some point.
Robert
There are 2 750GB ones aswell which may be sutied to the Drobo.

They are all rack mount, and there are some 1U ones in there.
P.S. to people following this thread, not all the servers are up for
grabs, one 1U one is mine and one belongs to Charles, both are labeled on
the front, and both have blue bits on them.

oops, i ment labeled on the *top*, they arn't labeled on the front, at
least not too obviously.

I've just recounted the SATA drives with a view to getting them on ebay
later this week, please do NOT now remove any of the sata drives without
checking with me first as i don't want to sell things we don't have!
If you see anyone pokeing around the drives or asking questions about them
please refer them to this email and me.

The last 4 servers are now (at long last) listed on ebay:

Is it too late to call dibs on a server?
To co-locate for use in the management of an anti-censorship project
I'm involved in.
Thanx :)

It already has a bid on it so we can't cancel it :(
However there are a load of 1U servers in the batch we got from Nokia,
they are SCA scsi tho (we have loads of drives for them, but max size
73Gb!).

Awwwwww. I'm new here. I had no idea.
Those other ones, will they take a SATA adapter?
Or will it then turn into replacing all the caddys and such like as
well to make it work?
Oh well... In the mean time. Welcome to my hobby.
Forcing up the price of ebay auctions I know I'll never win.
Also, ^ needs to be an xdcd already.

SCA Drives are way outside my budget I'm afraid.
Looking at the cheap 300gb ones. One of those is more than my total
monthly income... And that's without even paying any bills first.
Afraid health problems keep me from paid work, hence why all the
voluntary activism. But means I'm relying on Disability Allowance as
my sole income.

Afraid if I had the sort of money I could pay what an SCA drive sells
for. I'd have gone out and picked up a server on the second hand
market already rather than getting excited about the prospect of a
nearly free one elsewhere.
I can afford 30 for a server. But that is about my top limit atm.
My plan for affording the co-location was just fit an excess or ram
and storage and virtualize a chunk of said excess resources to rent
out to trusted buddies cheap. Or failing that have friends in germany
with fiber who'd hook it up there for me for free.

I'd consider this. SATA drives are cheap enough to find myself.
What sort of RAM does it use? What is the maximum?
I really suck at make an offer. But if cost, and that includes cost of
getting into the space to pick it up is more than about 50, then I'd
have to take time to save up the money. Which I don't mind doing, but
may take towards end of the year.

Best value you're likely to get is one of the proliants for £30.
But hardware cost is really minimal here - running it will cost a lot more.
/m
I'm currently the high bidder on the first server on ebay I saw that
would be perfect. Hopefully it stays that way and I win the auction.
Sadly, the server is a necesity rather than a want, as have very
limited internet access available most of the time. But after I've
finished moving should be able to spare 40/month for co-locating as
the advantage of moving to a place with no phone lines... will be no
phone or adsl bills!
