last night someone drew a new mural on the old kitchen wall. I asked
them to check with the mailing list first before doing this and was
met with a "but the other one i did was fine."

Regardless of this request its been done anyway, I'm no art critic but
I can only describe it as "a bit shit" when compared to the other
artworks around the space

Please ask everyone before doing this kind of thing

I actually think it looks quite good, apart from whoever scrawled the green pen over it, that looks a bit crap, apart from that its pretty cool

I tend to agree, this is a bit of a mess. I find it embarrassing
thinking that potential new members will see it tonight. I appreciate
art is subjective, but this is a bit kack - I've actually bought art
graffiti taken off the walls of public toilets, but this...

I am deeply concerned that a non-member (they have denied intending to
ever become a member) has done this when specifically asked not to
without first consulting the list first which comprises of members who
subsidize said person. This is rule 5 of the community.

I'm feeling that the rights of members are being trampled upon here,
our voice was intentionally disregarded. The one right I thought that
came with membership was a voice in AGMs/EGMs/etc - a voice does not
necessarily mean people need to agree with me, but it means that I
have the *opportunity* to have a say. The concern is that our
singular right was intentionally disregarded by a person who does not
have to adhere by our common rules given that they are intentionally
not a member, our rules are intended to foster friendship and being
nice and I feel that someones trying to pee in the communal pool.

It's not a very good drawing.

I have drawn two things on the walls in the Hackspace - Chairman Jonty and the Adalovelace sketch. I admit I didnt ask about either. Thats my bad (actually, I believe I asked whoever was around at the time for both - the former was a surprise).

However, I am upset with the issues arising when they are from non-members. The minimum amount for subscription is there for a reason. Anyone who wants to be a member can be but the subscription shows your commitment to a communal ideal. Essentially, put your money where your mouth is. I definitely believe that a fiver a month is nothing. I take great issue with people acting like members (I.e using equipment and desks on a regular basis) and not paying. Its unfair on these who do and undermines all our efforts.

I think this needs to stop sooner rather than later.

I agree with the sentiment of the Hackspace is a Community. If you use it often, you should participate in it - not just adding "art" to the walls or setting up a standing order for a few bob, but actually interacting civilly with the other people who use the space.  Be a bit friendlier, get to know people. That's probably how the smaller community would have worked, we just need to introduce the concept of being super-friendly. Maybe it'd be nice if we introduce ourselves to people a bit more? There's probably a few people I've seen a few times in the space who I don't actually know the name of which is a bit awkward.

Quite.

I managed £5/mo when I was living off the lower rate of Jobseekers
Allowance (£53.45/wk). Not wanting to join the 'space is fine; it
*is* optional. But defacing the walls when specifically asked not to
by people who *do* pay is unexcellent.

so many people so much lately that it's becoming a habbit so I told

Seconded. And if it forces someone to replace it with something with
artistic merit, or hide it behind shelves, that's a win in my book.

so it'd be ok for me to stencil pedobear on all the unfinished
projects to ensure people finish them?

Off to the kitchen I go...

There are lots of good reasons Amir's daubing shouldn't last long in the space.

That you could be more of a dick if you wanted is not one of them.

I asked him to check with the list first before doing this, how is
that trolling? Apparently now giving a shit about the space is deemed
"trolling..,

(I've had a shit day, and so maybe, overly grouchy)

I don't have a strong opinion either way....I haven't seen it in person. It might be nicer if it was colour, but....

An argument about artistic merit of some wall painting? Really? It's like arguing about f!@king health and safety!

I mean, the guy didn't kill anyone, or steal anything.

So, he's not [insert awesome artist name here], but so what? Neither am I. There are a lot of people who talk complete rubbish about stuff in the hack space I know about, but I don't stand up and banish them to Heck.

Maybe fair point, he should have mailed the list, but would he have gotten a response? Maybe his "artisticosity" (it should be a word!) was going there and then, and the answer would have come the next day. If it was a major thing he wanted to do then sure, but it's just drawing on a wall.

It's not like he tore a wall down. If it's shit, then a) someone else paints over it, or b) if enough people feel strongly about it, maybe get him to make it better, or take it down. I will offer to do some art work with my sharpies if anyone wants.

Give the guy a break. To guy who did it: well done for painting something in public. But I wouldn't give up the day job. But keep going ;)

Come on peeps...lighten up. I'm going back in my cave now....

Sup, feel free to take it down. I was told not to worry after asking
around.

Also nobody subsidises me. I throw money in the pot. I don't like
having my name on lists of things. I'm a bit of a private person.
