from wikipedia...

The RepRap Project is an initiative aimed at creating a largely self-replicating machine which can be used for rapid prototyping and manufacturing. A rapid prototyper is a 3D printer that is able to fabricate three dimensional artifacts from a computer-based model. Project authors describe 'self-replication', understood as the ability to reproduce the components necessary to build another version of itself, as one of the goals for the project. It is self-replication that distinguishes the RepRap Project from the similar Fab@Home project.

Could be interested in this, while not directly interested in the self replication side, I’m interested in all things CNC at the moment.

I was thinking about building one but I was planning to try scaling it
up, the size of the thing seems like a bit of a limitation.

Personally I would rather make a http://www.makerbot.com/ , it would be
very usefull tool to add to the space some day!

I want to make a openStreetMap map jigsaw puzzle with it :)

I saw one of these last weekend, the cupcake frosting demo is very cool.

The makerbot is essentially the same as the reprap in fact they use
the same software and electronics
(http://blog.reprap.org/2009/03/announcing-makerbot-industries.html)

I'm interested in an effort to build either one.

The only reason I suggest the maker bot is that the rep rap is said to be the "grandfather" of the maker bot, and that a maker bot would have a lot more uses in the space. But I have based this on videos made by the makers of the maker bot, so it may be a bit biased ;)

I'm also interested. I've collected a few parts (not usually the recommended ones  - just things I might adapt) and have facilities to machine some of the bits for a rep-strap. I'd certainly be interested in working with some other builders.

Charles - the thing that appealed to me about the reprap is the open source continual improvement software & hardware - so we could upgrade it later - though the laser cut look has totally got me - do you know if the maker bot has freely available schematics / software?

Dominic - how big were you thinking? would it be worth building a regular size bot first?

Aden - its fine, our inferior gunpowder based weapons will save the rubbery looking aliens that come to say hi

(grammar fail on subject line - aiyee)

Yup, totaly free  and open source, the maker bot and reprap teams share members :) I would love to help with either, but personaly I would like to help with a maker bot as it can also make you a rep rap, 2 bots for the price *ish ;)* of one!
