I tried to use the de-soldering station this evening and it was again
clogged and not working, I tried to get into the filter to empty the
contents of the black container but the catch wouldn't release - some
light percussive maintenance was used which caused the end to fall
off.

fail.

so, it's completely broken. I don't think it should have fallen apart
like it did so I guess it was going anyway.

Anyone know of a better model we could get?

It looks like I can replace the gun portion for around 20 quid, worth
putting that towards a different model or shall I just order a
replacement gun for this one?

Answers on a postcard please.

Created a temporary fix, cleaned out the iron and held it on with
wire.. obviously it gets hot but it wasn't enough to burn me just
quite warm - slowly verging on uncomfortable - it's usable in this
state just not ideal.

pending replacement.

Thanks for being mature enough to own up.

I'm inclined to say just replace the broken bit, as it was fine as it was (i think!). Unless there's any real reason to upgrade it to a different model...

Yes,

And clean it more often so it doesn't get so rammed.

Whenever i've been de-soldering stuff, i've just been using a
soldering iron and a solder-sucker.

Maybe when we introduce people to these tools, we should include a
maintenance session.

I know i usually like to learn this as part of learning to use a new
tool. Maintaining the equipment through it's effective use is just
good practise.

If someone is around to talk me through how this thing works, i'll be
in this afternoon/early evening.

Just for the record, I clean it /every/ time I use the thing.. Even
before I start because it's always full of shit. Please don't assume
it was me who blocked it all up, as that's not accurate.

It's a lot better now, but i've had the same experience with the mini-
lathe.

We're not assuming that it was you who clogged it up.

You're the person who was trying to fix the problem.

Okay, I must have misunderstood. Cheers Billy :)

Sorry, Morris, obviously you're not the only person who uses it. No criticism intended and I echo tgreer's  approval that you spoke up.

My comment was meant more generally, and if you often find it's blocked (i.e. this wasn't just a one-off) then it's even more valid.

Somebody needs to check frequently, and advise others how to maintain it. Adopt it, in fact :)

(yes, I know booyaa has adopted the soldering bench but that can't include every piece of equipment on it, there's too much. Unless he says otherwise it's literally the work surface).

Mentar, not booyaa. More apologies.

We tried to use this desoldering station while we were putting the
badges together for EMF, and it was very ineffective even after
thoroughly cleaning out the filters. I couldn't really work out why -
it seemed like the suction was leaking somewhere in between the end of
the tube and the bit.

We ended up using a long length of hose with the hoover, which worked
surprisingly well.

Get the replacement part.

Although it would be nice to get a slightly better quality one there is nothing
available for less than 500. At work we decided it made more sense to
get the cheap one and replace it every couple of years, we are on our second
one. We the old one is kept as a source of spare parts, haven't needed any
yet.

Yeah, thanks for reporting it Morris and attempting to fix it.
I'll take a look at it next time I'm in (hopefully today after 8pm). So far all I managed to do is clean it a bit as I've been working on the mini-lathe controls, so accomplice(s) would be welcome :)

I'm planning on making a few clear laminated guides for the tools I'm helping to look after. Like the etching instructions and times for the etch station, looks like it's a good idea to do one one/few for the soldering stations tools.

Cheers
