Hole Saw Cutter Drill Bit For Wood

Hello friends,

A basic requirement from a new joinee:

1. I need to cut a thin disk (1 cm thick) from a solid, cylindrical wood-material. The disk will have the same diameter as that of the cylinder. Which machine in LHS can be used for this ? Any demo also will be highly appreciated.

2. Also, I need to use couple of Hole Saw Cutter Drill (140mm and 150mm dia) but the largest I found in LHS with dia 127mm. Does anybody have these? It will be very helpful as my requirement is little urgent.

Since you already have a cylindrical shape to cut from, any saw will do this as it just needs a straight cut. However you will find it best to use a guide to keep the bar at right angles to the blade. 

For a hand saw this is a piece of wood with bars each end : one end hooks over the edge of the bench and the bar is gripped by hand in the other end.

For a mechanical saw, the bandsaw or the chop saw is good. The chop saw may not handle items of the diameter you are using in which case the band saw or even the table saw will be required. In all cases use a guide to hold the bar : a sliding guide for the bandsaw or table saw, the built-in guide for the chop saw. 

All mechanical saws can be dangerous and should not be used without previous experience or tuition.

That's quite a large diameter for a hole cutter though you might find one that large. You can  also use a 'tank cutter' - it's cheaper than a hole saw and is adjustable, but needs a bit of practice to get a good result. Use it with a pillar drill - it's hard to control with a hand-held drill.

A better way to do it would be to drill a central hole and clamp it to the bandsaw table, rotating around that central hole. Then make the centre 75mm from the blade and rotate the work through the blade.

Not only are those hole saw sizes large, but you're unlikely to find those specific sizes. Hole saw sizes, especially larger ones, seem to actually be imperial (so for example you can get a 152mm, which is 6 inches). I think the only real market for them must be making holes for things that sizes were standardized on decades ago.

Another thing that comes to mind is the laser cutter, if you're trained on it and your material is suitable.
