Just spotted something delightfully large and mechanical on ebay, but
it's just north of Birmingham and I can't drive. The seller is willing
to palletise it. Would likely be in the 40Kg range, but odd shape means
it'd be about 140cm high. It would also fit into a large van.

Because the height makes it a "full pallet" size category, cheapest
quote I've seen so far looks like £80. And my spend is probably about
£100 for item & delivery, so puts my odds of getting it fairly low.

If anyone can suggest a cheaper service I'd love to hear it.

I believe £80 is pretty much the going rate for a single pallet within
the UK. You might be able to get it a bit cheaper by trying to find a
haulage company local to the seller.

Seems reasonable, though price depends on whether you specify a tail lift truck at either end.
If tail lift is not needed, then could be £20 or more cheaper.
I've used Palletways in the past but nowadays Parcel2Go and others do cheap pallet brokerage.
Make sure your client is able to load strap and wrap the pallet adequately for the tuckers.
Drivers will not accept loads that they deem a transport risk, and you get billed for the wasted journey.

A door to door delivery van is unlikely to be cheaper.

Quite right it seems. Looks like ParcelMonkey (btw, don't use them for
anything international. I had such trouble.) do an under~250Kg pallet
service for £46.99. Doesn't say if that's with or without VAT though.
Still, cheap enough for me.

Scratch the ParcelMonkey recommendation. The price vanishes the moment
any dimension gets larger than a meter, regardless of the weight promise.
