Hi,

I recently found out about London Hackspace online whilst searching for somewhere that would allow me to make a personal project I've recently wanted to try. I notice pre-pandemic you did open evenings, but these aren't running anymore. I wondered if it would be possible to visit the space sometime this weekend to have a look around and then maybe even sign up and do a bit of work whilst there?

The project I want to do is to make a golf putter head, initially out of dry wood with embedded metal weights, but the end goal would be to make one with stabilised wood in combination with clear cast resin and embedded metal weights.

Thanks,
Adam

Hi Adam,

We plan to restart the Tuesday evening open sessions from 7:30pm on 7th September. You're welcome to come along then, or any subsequent Tuesday (Covid restrictions permitting). If you're unable to get there on a Tuesday evening, you will have to make arrangements with a member to let you in and show you around. Please note that membership may not be instant, as we like to see your membership fee in our account before full access is granted. That can take up to 4 days, depending on how you pay. Also note that some equipment has controlled access and cannot be used before you have been trained to use it safely. This is for the safety of our equipment, for the safety of the premises, for the safety of other members, and for your own safety.

Your project is one that is suitable to be done in the space and would be welcomed.

Hope to see you there soon.

Henry

Hi Henry,

That sounds good, thanks for your response!  I'll keep an eye on the mailing list to see if anyone is showing people before then as having since had a read through more posts I think that sometimes happens, but otherwise I look forward to having a look around on the 7th. Regarding training on equipment (which I agree is definitely a good thing!), how is this organised? I've had a search on the wiki but I haven't come across anything and the training directory page is blank.

Thanks,
Adam

Hi Adam if I find myself onsite I'll reply to this thread, I'm more than happy to show you round when I'm there although mostly what I know is the wood shop. I'm not 100% when I will next be in as it depends when parts arrive for my car, how long it takes me to get it back together, when I can book an MOT and if the MOT picks up anything I missed.

In terms of access controlled devices it is a matter of showing a maintainer of the device that you are going to use it safely and where required have them give you what ever instruction you need. In the wood shop many of the tools that could take your hand off are able to be used without restriction anyway. I think the two exceptions are the big table saw and the wood lathe. So given you plan to start in wood and move to metal you should be able to arrange something with those you need to.

In the case of some specialist kit like the laser cutter and 3D printer there are organised training events put on where you get instructed on their safe operation and then added to the approved user list at the end of the training.

Kind regards
Ant

Hi Ant,

That sounds great thanks! I don't think I'll end up on the lathe, but probably would use a table saw. Metal wise I've bought a handful of small steel discs for now, but I would be interested down the line in cutting about 10mm thick steel sheet if you have a laser/plasma cutter with that capability. For now though it sounds like I could get access to most things I'd need to make a solid start and can sort any required training as I get to know people / the space / as events are arranged. I'll keep an eye on this thread in case you say you are in.

Thanks,
Adam

While the large table saw requires access control there is a smaller Dewalt jobsite saw (it's a 745 I think) which anyone can use. It's still a very capable table saw and if you have seen 3x3 customs youtube channel she manages a lot of very impressive stuff with the same model so should be enough for your needs atleast in the near term. We do have a cross cut sled and zero clearance insert for the dewalt which make it very capable.

The C&C laser cutter isn't rated for metal but there is a thread about a C&C plasma cutter being planned and think in that people have talked of hand plasma cutters we have onsite.

Kind regards

Not a channel I've seen before but just taken a quick look and the Dewalt I think would be fine for my needs so that's great. And ooh that's interesting regarding getting a plasma cutter, I'll keep an eye out in case I do want to use it in future, thanks for the heads up.

Best wishes,
Adam

Adam,

Just to point out that training is a private arrangement between the maintainer and the trainee. As such, the maintainer is entitled to a fee to cover their time. This is usually £5 per person.

Thanks for the info guys I use to be a member at Hackney and Wimbledon a few years back. Can't wait to get back into the fold. See you on the 7th. Is there a place I can sign up? I couldn't find anything appropriate on the events page to register my interest.

I'm dropping a friend at Heathrow tomorrow afternoon so was going to head over to the space after I drop them off, expect to arrive by 3pm. Earliest I'll leave is 8pm, likely later but if someone is definitely coming and asks me to hang around a little later than that I can do if Adam or Max wanted a tour? Again the area I know is the wood shop but I'll dredge what I can remember from my tour about the other areas. There is a 20 min video on the home page which is quite informative too, it's a few years old so some areas have changed but covers many key points well.

Kind regards
Ant

Hi Ant,

Really appreciate the offer but I've taken tomorrow off and am out with family until late, so I won't be able to make it. Thanks though and if you're in another evening do let me know and I'll hopefully be able to come. I'll have a look at the video too :-)

Thanks again,
Best wishes,
Adam

I've had days where I've not left till 11pm if I've got in a swing with a project so feel free to ping to see if I'm still about. Although from the sounds of it you might be shattered yourself. I think there is talk of a proper open evening next Tuesday, I'll not be there myself for that one but there will be many people with a wide working knowledge of everything so likely better briefing anyway.

Waiting to see if I get scheduled at the vaccine centre for Saturday or not, if not I'll be in, but there has been such a rush by the under 18s that I think they are going to want every hand they can there.

Kind regards
Ant

Thanks for the kind request Ant but I was swamped today.
I will be in on the next 7th as Henry said that would be an open day potentially.
Or if your in next week, I would love to see the space.
I'm an arduino/videogame maker guy so if anyone is reading this that is interested then I would love to chat at the space.

Hi, I've just joined - I was wondering if the open session mentioned above was still going ahead tomorrow, if so what time should I arrive? I've not yet visited the space so not sure about how I set up access to the space?

Thanks

Hi Rachael,

I'll be there tomorrow at 7:30 (or shortly after, depending on traffic). I hope that several more members and guests will also be there. If you go into the lobby of 388, High Road and ring the bell on the door opposite, someone will let you in. You can then set up your access at the members' kiosk so that you can get in at any time, day or night, 365. You'll need an Oyster or bank card to set up access. We only use those to identify you, not to take any money from you.

Henry.

No problem Max. Unless otherwise notified (due to Covid restrictions or something else) the Tuesday evening open evenings are now every Tuesday from now on. I have altered the wiki to reflect that change.

Hi I have just joined, and set up membership. it said something about , if fees haven't been taken that might be a problem, is it ?
Another friend and I hope to come to the next tues, tour, hoping it will be available, to look around and
meet some members. If it isn't likely , it would be good to know.
Thanks Anna

Hi Anna,

There are 3 main reasons for failing to gain access:

  1. Not a member
  2. A member but no entry card set up yet
  3. No one there to let you in

You should not have a problem.. #1 and #3 are covered - open evening is on and there will be people there to let you in. They can also help you with #2 if necessary..

The fees not taken issue refers to the possibility of the system not yet recognising a payment – live membership shows that it has so all good.

We look forward to seeing you on Tuesday.

Regards

Paddy

There's a fourth reason, which is card has been added to a valid membership, but you still have to wait 20 minutes for that new card details to percolate down to the access systems. The instructions on the kiosk screen explain this, but a few people get confused by this.

I was in on a Tuesday a few weeks ago before the open nights were official again and someone who had signed up but not registered a card came in. He registered one but it didn't work at first but as Simon says after 20 mins its fine so if you want a tour but have singed up register the card first so you can test the card after the tour without needing to wait to see if it worked.

Kind regards
Ant
