Hi All,

I'm looking to make a couple of simple oil drum BBQs for the summer and was hoping some metal-heads would be interested in helping. I've not done much metal work or welding before, and could use an experienced guide.

I've found a source for clean barrels. Plan is to simply cut them in half, and create some simple X-frame legs. Still need to source some material for the grills too.

Anyone interested in getting involved, ideally will be bashing them out on the Friday 20th June or Saturday 21st June.

It's a great project to practice welding, I made one last year.

I recommend getting some angle iron to weld around the edges of the base half and the top if you can be bothered. Once cut is half the drums lose a lots of structural stiffness. I then found some big steel hinges and welded them in too.

That's great advice, thanks. I think I'm planning to build them without hinges and lids to keep it simple, and so we have 4 BBQ grills to have some large scale cooking!

What did sort of material did you use for the actual grills themselves?

You can do either. Cutting one in half it will manage as long as you do a decent support underneath. Add a basic frame for it to sit on and sort of in, & job done.

Fancier way is to make a closeable clam shell with a piano (or couple of) hinge, as you can then smoke stuff too.

Cutting a quarter out isn't something I've tried, but seems like it would work. Perhaps add the spare part back with a couple of slots and two bolts for a sliding lid?

Random thought: what happened to the drum I cut in half at EMF the other year?

Happy to give a hand, though you'd probably be better learning welding from someone else, otherwise i'll just be teaching you my mistakes... :))

Where did you get the barrels? Are you absolutely sure that they are clean? Friend of mine back home was injured when cutting an oil drum that hadn't been properly cleaned. I know the proper procedure for cleaning and cutting gas bottles, but i've not tried oil drums.

Also there's a friend of mine who wants to build a rocket stove and asked me to look out for an oil drum. How much are they?

You can normally find them on eBay for about a fiver. I got one that had white spirit in it and it was spotless.

The grills are quite expensive so I used a bit of steel plate but I am the lookout for something better.

Hi,

There is a working Arc Welder in the space, the mig welders are not really suited to such heavy work, and are still being brought either in to service or up to speed.

All you really need is a 2kg pack of mild steel welding rods from Machine Mark (about a tenner) and a mini grinder cutting disk which are only a couple of quid also from machine mart. The space has left over rods from previous jobs, but you are about to do a big job, so it is best to get a box yourself, or you risk running out.

Maria, has done one for big Dean.

The metal meet up on Wendensday eveings, about 7-8pm so pop in then and catch up with them then.

Liam
