Had an arduino uno linked up to an RFID sensor and door lock.  Power was a bit sketchy over Christmas and whilst it powers up, can't seem to get it to do anything.

Anyone got experience in troubleshooting them?  Not sure if it's something I can easily fix.  I'm replacing it with a Tosduino nano anyway but a shame to loose a development board

If you're lucky, you may just have fried the I/O pin, and be able to use others.  If you can't flash it, you'll want to try another chip.

Before you do that, you should be aware it's a bad idea to connect an arduino directly to a door lock.  Relays dump a higher voltage when they demagnetise and this can fry anything attached unless you have a diode to protect it.

Is it a DIL version one just swap the 328, or if its an SMD one (although way more laborious than buying a new one) its not to hard to remove the IC with a hot air gun and put on a new one with an iron and tweezers.

then re-load the bootloader onto it through the TX and RX pins with an AVR programmer or another arduino UNO.

I mean through the ICSP connections not TX and RX !!!

You can also buy 328s with the Arduino bootloader already flashed, they are not that much more expensive IIRC, and save a lot of fiddling around.

The Uno is surface mount, right?
I would try reloading the boot loader on the old chip first.
It might have lost it or the fuse settings if it suffered a voltage spike.

Uno was made both versions: SMD or with replaceable AVR chip.
The SMD version was made during a period when there was a shortage of the through hole part to keep production going. It's explained here: http://arduino.cc/en/Main/ArduinoBoardUnoSMD

I was talking about this one

it comes with footprint for both SMD packages. The bigger footprint is easy to re-solder that mini package would be much harder to solder.

I used a relay (with diode) kit.  It was the fact we kept getting brown outs and the mains was on/off a lot I'd assume.

Maybe I'll bring it into the space on a tuesday night?

I will be in the hackspace in an hour and also on Monday evening for NJA meeting. I have a Atmel chip with arduino bootloader  you can swap and see if that is the only fried component.

Just in case you might be able to make to the next one. We have NJA meetings every 2 weeks on Mondays.

I work about 4 mins by Boris bike. I'm much aggrieved to have missed out on the etching session!
