Is the old space in Hackney still available? If yes, is the milling machine also accessible today?

If no to either, what can I do to speed up the opening of the new space to get access to a mill?

Thanks
Anthony

No, and no.

Come to the new wembley space and help out, but it will be a while before
there is a mill running:

I'm trying to set up a makerspace in East London, but don't have a venue yet. I do however have a mill of my own I intend to lend to it initially, so if it's an urgent job you're welcome to come use that during the week. My own workshop is in Highams Park.

On this note:

Does anyone know when the Staubli arm might be likely to come out of storage? I was hoping to some down and look at doing some demos with it as we're looking at getting an arm for somewhere I'm helping out with.

Dear Peter and other London Hackspace members,

I am trying to set up my own personal studio/workshop in East London
(preferably close to Haggerston. I live around here, and I want to stay
close to my family.

The purpose is to build and configure clusters of enterprise-grade
server computers for my own personal side project. Then, after the
servers are configured, I would package them up on pallets and send them
to colocation.

There is a libre computing, security-focussed, and communal or
co-operative context to this project. It is all self-funded, so no
typical start-up life type of thing. I'm currently working on a website
to give this project visibility and to explain to interested people what
it's all really about.

Also, I am returning to hardware hacking and learning about firmware
hacking, so I need a space to do soldering, etc.

Do you think this maker space would be suitable for doing this kind of
work, if it was a shared operation? I did notice, however, that you
mentioned operation of a mill, which I imagine would generate dust. A
dusty environment is one of the worst things for servers. Regardless of
a mill, it's likely that I'll invest in some sort of air filtering system.

If you or anybody else has any suggestions, then I would love to hear
all about them. I'd be very happy to team up with another person or
team who has similar interests.

Possibilities so far:

- I have bee considering, one and off, renting one of the containers
in Containerville, but they are too expensive for a single person, so
this would need to be a shared space.

- Regent Studios on Andrews Road look particularly intriguing, and the
location is ideal. I've yet to make enquiries.

If any any has any suggestions or would consider joining forces in
co-sharing, then please let me know. Thanks!!

Kind regards,

Andrew

I can't speak for the LHS, but historically one project is treated like another; you get permission to store something based on it's description and desired length of storage and the average tone of the mailing list response decides. However I've gotten the impression that things might be organised a bit differently in the new space, so can't say if there'd be any special exceptions for ongoing/perpetual projects like yours sounds.

For Workbench Alpha I can only state intents, since so much will depend on the specifics of the eventual venue. But one founding premise is to actively support projects of community/social benefit (that meet certain requirements) with discounted or waived rates on storage and materials, plus one project (at a time) of set scope to receive a support budget (eventually). So it would depend on the specific goal to say whether yours would be eligible for special support.

Regarding milling operations; spaces are usually set up into discrete areas and it's unlikely you'd find machining operations in the same room as electronics. Many processes aren't compatible with each-other. Textiles & crafts don't agree with grease and oil. Electronics aren't compatible with dust and swarf. It's a poorly laid out workspace that encourages cross-contamination.
