Hello Hackers,

I was clearing out the cellar and amongst building materials I found a tub of Calcium Hydroxide 98.7% ACS (Reefkalkwasser / Hydrated Lime) with chemical warning signs on it. I looked it up and it seems to come under several names including slacked lime. Wikipedia says it can be used in food preparation and for the mixing of plaster but it still seems to be very toxic as the MSDS* sheet I found spells out. It's in an unopened tub and clear plastic bag. I can isolate it further but does anyone have any advise on who to turn to responsibly dispose or recycle such things?

I didn't grep whether you want to get it removed from the Hackspace, or from your private residence, but if the latter then...

...City of London offer a collection service for boxed chemicals to the London Boroughs;

here are some more details, with the contact number at the bottom of the pdf;

If it's in a sealed bag, it's stable. Don't open the bag, moisture will degrade it.

I don't see any reason to dispose of it. It's not dangerous unless you open it and stick your hands in, and was probably acquired for something useful.

Sprinkle it on the garden; assuming you are in London somewhere, almost everything except roses and magnolias will love it. And in no time it will be just chalk.

this can be useful, it used to be an everyday product used in building and is remerging but many other uses, i dont see the reason for disposal, just proper storage

This is quite a useful reagent for multiple fields of hacking.

Provided sensibly stored and labelled (sounds like it is) its no danger
to anybody but the chronically stupid or tyler durden.
