location:
london hackspace, very very near hoxton station, tuesdays

time:
tuesdays

skills used:
anything that gnome installs under 'graphics' is pretty much covered
the use of libraries and command line tools, rather than gui's, is
highly regarded, due to its scalability
the more you can integrate your use of various programs to produce
excellent stuff, the better

things we could raise a pledge for:
a wacom bamboo tablet
http://graphicdesign.stackexchange.com/questions/52/what-image-tablet-can-you-recommend-on-a-budget

structure of proposed group:
the usual dojo manner...
people cast a vote for an interesting task that can be accomplished in
the allotted time in small groups
ie, at each meeting you learn a different skill by hacking something
in a small group or individually
basically, if you want to learn how someone does something, you tag
along with them. if you already know, just get on with it.
participants also free to give (no more than 3 people, in the interest
of time) mini talks about something they're working on

examples of possible tasks:
every group makes a 3d model of a _insert type of thing here_ in 30-45
minutes
every group makes a 2d sprite in various states of animation in 30-45
minutes
every group makes a typeface in 30-45 minutes
every group makes a one-page comic (needs tablet)
being in groups means that you get to copy other people's methods
this is not necessarily competitive, could be something like a
collaborative attempt at 'totally converting' the graphics in secret
maryo chronicles or opensonic in a given timespan
you're not required to work in a group if you don't want to, just show
your results at the end and explain a bit about how you did it

possibility of making cool stuff?
yes. every meeting would have something to show for itself.

if you'd be interested in this, please simply reply to this message
with your graphics skillset and a list of things you'd like to learn:

me:
gimp, inkscape, scripting imagemagick via the shell
would like to learn: SDL (simple directmedia layer)

feel free to text me at
zero seven five four four four zero four three three two

I use photoshop - can we do some graphic dojo using that?
(more art discussion than just 'how to use photoshop')

I believe the only raster-based programs on the hackspace computers
are ones from the Debian/Ubuntu repositories. So as long as you have
your laptop with you, yes. The object will be to make stuff (ie
graphics) in groups (dojo-style), so the programs people use shouldn't
matter.

I'm interested.
I'm already a member of hackspace, if that helps.

Tuesdays can be quite busy at the hackspace, so another day might be better?

A graphics dojo sounds great.  I have been learning more things about using Inkscape, Gimp and MyPaint recently, but I am sure there is a lot more to learn.

Although I am not a digital artist or graphics designer by trade, thought these tools help me create some neat communications materials such as posters and better looking websites.  I'd like to use the dojo's to grow what I can do and I like the sound of being able to do one page comics, etc  I do some advocacy and advertising for several technical communities such as the Ubuntu UK LoCo, London Java Community and Graduate Development Community.

I picked up a laptop pc with a touch screen recently and would like to get the most out of it.

Thinking further ahead I'd really like to learn more about animation in Blender.  I have worked with Maya a long time ago, so am looking to re-learn a lot of things in Blender

Thank you
John Stevenson.

Hey, I'm interested.

I'm a programmer, currently loving creating chunky retro OpenGL graphics
from Python:
http://tartley.com/?p=1207
and making indie games
http://code.google.com/p/brokenspell/
(sprites done with some very amateur use of GIMP)

Hi,

I'd be up for it.

Designer by night. Loads of Photoshop, 3ds Max experience... but I'm making a switch to *nix tools so that I can finally ditch my last Windows machine. Very interested in learning Blender, GIMP & Inkscape.

Regards,

Seyi

It will be Tuesday afternoons, not evenings.

I'll be there from 4:00 this week. So whoever's interested, feel free
to come. It's near Hoxton overground station. If you're not a
hackspace member, it currently only costs $5 a month to become one and
receive free 24-hour use of the facilities (including free wifi, sink,
toaster, laptops, storage space, and a laser cutter, etc.)

Some possible projects we can do:
--try to write some simple blender scripts
--make sprites for the inter-dojo game
--make a short comic

...all of which can be voted upon dojo-style.

Last Tuesday someone mentioned bringing a drawing tablet with them. If
you have one of these, feel free to bring it along.

Just to clarify, the London Hackspace is a co-operatively owned
organisation, and members are asked to pay what they think is
appropriate.

The minimum we ask for is £5 per month, the average is around £20 per
month and currently they are not able to meet their basic costs (rent,
bills etc). So they are recruiting new members all the time.

You are welcome to use the space, however if you are not a member a
few quid in the donation tins would be appreciated.

Afternoons don't work at all for me, since I'm at work. :-(((((

Does anyone else want to do an event outside office hours?
