Hi London DevOps,

So, there appears to be another London DevOps: https://twitter.com/Prism_Digital/status/508291832863027200

Which is having a kick-off meeting, in a place where I thought we'd already had a London DevOps meeting http://www.meetup.com/London-DevOps/events/201621392/

Are we and they related? If not, perhaps we could combine forces?

Anna

Prism Digital seem to be a recruitment agency.  Just putting that out there without comment :)

Ah! Hadn't spotted that.

We should totally arrange a rival event then :)

I'm one of the co-organisers of Tuesday's meet and I'm certainly not a recruiter, and I hate most of them too!  Anna - we met at Jon's Devops lunch in Covent Garden a few months ago and talked about poker. :)

I'm unclear on the exact history of the meetup group, but the previous owner abandoned it, so Marc and I stepped up to take it over since it seemed daft to let a community like that just drop on the floor.  There's big crossover between the groups, both these two and the Devops Exchange (Doxlon) group and probably many more. We have no desire to be "the" Devops London group - I think they can co-exist and actually feed each other so long as there are enough decent speakers to go around.  We're prepping a post-meetup questionnaire to see where that group actually wants to go.

And yes, we got instantly door-stopped by recruitment agencies wanting to sponsor.  Neither Marc nor I have easy access to big enough venues, nor wish to pay for 100x beer and pizza every month.  So we accepted that only from the recruiters who understand how much of a pain in the arse they are, so they'll be well-behaved, I promise. :)

+1 on what Matt just said.

We're grateful to have Prism Digital helping us look for venues and foot the bill on drinks + food. Also O'Reilly stepped in very rapidly providing books and tickets for their conferences, which we're very grateful for.

As of for the meetup organisers none of us are recruiters! We all come from the community :)

As Matt said the London DevOps meetup was the first one on meetup.com but unfortunately didn't have any activity for the last 1+ years, I thought (my mistake) that it was realted to the London DevOps mailing list so I gladly jumped in to help out, just afterwards thanks to R.I. Pienaar I discovered there were two separate things, nonetheless we want this to be part of the community and be able to give back, there is a lot of interest for DevOps and a lot of people wanting to learn the best ways to learn it and we hope we can be a helpful part of that.

Any feedback or suggestions we're all here, so fire away :)

I'd rather chip in a couple of quid than go to a meetup in which
recruiters are not involved in any way FWIW. I wonder how many people
feel the same...

I think its important to be pragmatic about things, I have zero
problems with recruiters putting up a sign on the entrance and making
a 5 min pitch before the talks start - judge them for the quality of
the pitch and if you want, engage with them or not.

The bit I have a massive problem with is when ( as has happened in
many cases ) attendee lists along with email address's are passed
along to the recruiters for post-event followup. Thats a no-no.

Ah – I'm speaking at one of the meetups and totally assumed it was an offshoot of this. +1 joining forces!

Hi Marc,

Re-opening an old thread here because it seems necessary to comment now.

You might want to keep a shorter leash on your friends at Prism Digital, who appear to be advertising the London DevOps meetup group as part of today's email campaign to, presumably scraped, email addresses (I wasn't signed up for that Meetup group previously).

The email begins:

"I wanted to ping you a mail early in the year to keep you posted about our London DevOps meet up group. We currently have just under 1000 members who have a passion for Open Source, Linux and DevOps technology."

It goes on to try and sell me one of their "exclusive candidates".

Their claiming of ownership of the group ("our London DevOps meet up group?"), and using it as a vector for recruitment spam, is precisely the sort of thing that I didn't want to see, and I certainly don't wish to see it again.

Hmm, yeah, that's across the line and not what we agreed with them.  Sorry.

I'll have a word.

Matt.
