What is OpenSignal

With 2 billion smartphones in the world and an explosion in the types of sensors they have, we're building next-gen sensor networks to help improve mobile coverage, make better weather predictions and examine the world in entirely new ways. We are a team of 12 based in Clerkenwell, London.

What's the job

This is our first dedicated DevOps hire. You’ll help us to build a scalable backend data processing pipeline that can handle high concurrency and analyse large volumes of data proficiently. You’ll be involved in everything from core backend code and shell scripting to managing data analysis. You’ll also work closely with our mobile developers to write the APIs and communication protocols to allow the backend to interface with the mobile clients. You'll also manage our cluster of EC2 and RDS instances that we use for sending data back to our apps and websites. 

We currently have millions of active devices in our sensor network, sending us approximately 150m rows of data per day (~30GB). Our current infrastructure is a collection of php scripts and SQL databases, which receive data and move it in batch to hadoop. Hadoop jobs move this data back to SQL, for use by our websites, apps and our enterprise product. We wish to re-architecture this to a real-time system of data processing, allowing us (for example) to update our coverage maps and weather maps as we get data. 

Desirable attributes

Prospective candidates will have experience with some of the following: 

• Scalable real-time processing infrastructure - e.g. AWS Redshift, Apache Spark, Storm etc
  
• Hadoop or related big data analysis technologies
  
• Scaling tools e.g. AWS Autoscaling, chef, puppet
  
• *nix sysadmin
  
• Geo databases and tools e.g. PostGIS, QGIS, tile servers
  
• Machine learning algorithms (we are also hiring a dedicated machine learning analyst)
