Woo! we got mentioned (-ish) in an article about Synthetic biology "Our adventures in synthetic biology - so far";

"It has been fascinating. We’ve spoken to a broad range of people with an even broader range of views on synthetic biology. From a cupboard-like space in the bio-hack lab in Hackney to paper-rich academic offices to sparkling corporate offices to white science labs to colourful NGO sofas to everyday dinner table discussions,....

Subject: Making deliberate decisions on synthetic biology - sharing project insights & the Deliberation Aid

Hi

This is a just a quick note to highlight that we have now shared the insights and output from our recent “enabling the conversation on novel biotech” project in collaboration with Friends of the Earth EWNI and the BBSRC. The project set out to understand the debate around synthetic biology, to examine the spectrum of opinions on whether it could be a part of a sustainable future, and if it could, what would need to happen for this to be the case.

We wanted to be able to join the conversation in an informed manner and make deliberate decisions on synthetic biology, and to enable others to do the same.

Together, Friends of the Earth EWNI, Forum and the BBSRC have produced a tool – the Synthetic Biology Deliberation Aid - that aims to enable people to do just that.

We hope that it will help people exploring this area to consider applications of synthetic biology holistically and empathetically. It’s essentially a print-ready workbook, which brings together all of the topic areas you might want to discuss and consider when making a decision around an application.

You can find the Deliberation Aid and some of the insights we have gained here:

·         The Deliberation Aid and accompanying guidance: http://forumforthefuture.org/project/making-deliberate-decisions-synthetic-biology/overview

·         A blog post that reflects on the project and the insights that we have gained so far: http://forumforthefuture.org/blog/our-adventures-synthetic-biology-so-far

·         A summary of the project process: http://forumforthefuture.org/project/enabling-conversation-novel-biotech/overview

We are sharing these with you because you have either been involved in the project in some way and / or we feel that you may benefit from the insights and resource in your work. We know that it is going to be used by the BBSRC and Ecover already, but we hope it will be useful far beyond this.

Thank you to those of you who have helped us to explore this area.

We would welcome your reflections, and any assistance that you can provide in sharing the insights gained and the Deliberation Aid itself more widely.

I am heading off on holiday for a week until the 6th July, but will be available for any questions and conversations on my return.

Have a great weekend.

All the best

Anna
