Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is the seventeenth main installment in the series. It was developed by Treyarch and Raven Software, and published by Activision. The game was released on November 13, 2020. Set during the 1980s and focusing on Soviet and American espionage during the Cold War, the game is chronologically set between Call of Duty: Black Ops and Black Ops II.[110]

On November 6, 2015, upon the release of Black Ops III, The Hollywood Reporter reported that Activision Blizzard launched a production studio called Activision Blizzard Studios and are planning a live action Call of Duty cinematic universe in 2019.[143] On February 16, 2018, it was announced that Stefano Sollima will direct the film. Days later, he told Metro UK that he is considering having both Tom Hardy and Chris Pine as the leads for the film.[144][145] In an interview with FilmSlash, Sollima stated that the film will be a real soldier movie, not a war movie.[146] On November 27, 2018, it was announced that Joe Robert Cole will be writing the sequel.[147] Filming on the first film was supposed to start filming in Spring 2019 for a 2020 or 2021 release.[148] In February 2020, Sollima revealed in an interview that the film is put on hold saying that it's not Activision's priority.[149]

In keeping with a series tradition over recent years, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3's Season 1 update came with a plethora of skins for battle pass owners to unlock. While these skins are earnable by simply playing the game for those who purchase the battle pass, Call of Duty also offers a wide selection of buyable skins in its Store section. Historically, skins that are a part of the Store's premium bundles are often visually interesting or unique, helping to tempt players towards forking over the hefty 2400 COD Points (about $24) in exchange for the cosmetic bundles. However, a new bundle recently added to Call of Duty's Store page has led players to express their frustrations over the game's newest cosmetics.

On December 28, Call of Duty added the Null & Void bundle to its Store. This bundle is priced at 2400 COD Points and features two skins, two blueprints, a calling card, a decal, and an emblem. Players quickly realized that the two skins in this bundle are simply recolored versions of previously released characters. This realization, along with the blueprints' lack of tracer features, which are often included with bundles priced at 2400 COD Points, led players to become concerned with Call of Duty's newest approach to premium bundles. Call of Duty fans took to the popular Modern Warfare 3 subreddit to voice their concerns.

True patriotism is embodied in the lives of those who volunteered to defend and protect our nation, and their remarkable, selfless acts of service must never be taken for granted. We are forever indebted to them for their service, and they deserve the utmost support and appreciation every day of the year. Not only should they receive our continuous gratitude, but just as they answered the dangerous call of duty, we have the duty to take care of them when they return home from the battlefield.

Today, there are more than 1.4 million service members on active duty and 21 million veterans living in the United States. Many of our veterans return from war forever changed, requiring care for both physical and mental challenges. Following their time in combat, our veterans depend on the health services provided by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

During an earnings call, Activision confirmed Infinity Ward would be developing Call of Duty 2022 and the developer took to Twitter to tease the next game. The acclaimed developer teased a "new generation" of Call of Duty is coming soon, but didn't offer any further details. According to reputable sources, Call of Duty 2022 may release in October and be revealed in the summer, but this Twitter post may suggest a reveal of the next game is more imminent than originally expected.

Acknowledging calls for future research involving video games and rhetoric and composition, this dissertation project answers those calls and furthers our understanding about playing video games as rhetorical action, but more importantly, this dissertation shows how a writing pedagogy based on gaming helps students better understand traditional and multimodal composition processes if the playing experience and the writing experience are considered together.

IGN has followed up with Activision to ask if this was a direct denial of the claims in the Bloomberg piece that specifically the typical major November Call of Duty release in 2023 would be delayed to 2024, and will update this story accordingly.

The annual Call of Duty release has traditionally been one of gaming's biggest moneymakers, typically topping sales charts in the US at launch and remaining in the top ten year-round. With a massive sales gap now looming, Activision is reportedly working on other projects to fill in the gap such as ongoing content for 2022's Call of Duty release and a separate new, free-to-play online game that's as yet unannounced.
