The success of the heroine Lisbeth Salander suggests a hunger in audiences for an action picture hero who is not a white 35ish male with stubble on his chin. Such characters are often effective, but they sometimes seem on loan from other films. There are few characters anywhere like Salander, played here by Rooney Mara and by Noomi Rapace in the original 2009 Swedish picture. Thin, stark, haunted, with a look that crosses goth with S&M, she is fearsomely intelligent and emotionally stranded.

It has been a fascination with the lean, fierce Salander that draws me into the "Girl" movies. We know horrible things happened to her earlier in life that explain her anger and proud isolation. Her apartment in Stockholm is like an eagle's aerie. She has an isolated life online, distant relationships with a few other technology geeks and a bleak loneliness. One of the undercurrents of these movies is the very gradual rapport that grows between Lisbeth and Mikael Blomkvist, the radical investigative journalist. This is never the kind of movie where they're going to fall in love. That she even smiles is a breakthrough.

The stories churn in my mind. I've read two of the Stieg Larsson novels, seen all three of the Swedish films and now am back for my third tour through the first story. It's an odd feeling to be seeing a movie that resembles its Swedish counterpart in so many ways, yet is subtly different under the direction of David Fincher and with a screenplay by Steven Zaillian. I don't know if it's better or worse. It has a different air.

Fincher is certainly a more assured director than Niels Arden Oplev, who did the 2009 Swedish film. Yet his assurance isn't always a plus. The earlier film had a certain earnest directness that seemed to raise the stakes. Emotions were closer to the surface. Rooney Mara and Noomi Rapace both create convincing Salanders, but Rapace seems more uneasy in her skin, more threatened. As the male lead Mikael Blomkvist, Michael Nyqvist seemed less confident, more threatened. In this film, Daniel Craig brings along the confidence of James Bond. How could he not? He looks too comfortable in danger.

The labyrinth of the story remains murky. The elderly millionaire Henrik Vanger (Christopher Plummer), cut off from the mainland on the family island, yearns to know how his beloved niece Harriet died 40 years ago. Because apparently neither she nor her body left the island on the day she disappeared, and no trace has ever been found, suspicion rests on those who were there that day, in particular other Vanger relatives whose houses overlook Henrik's from their own isolation.

In this film more than the original, the stories of Mikael and Lisbeth are kept separate for an extended period. We learn about the girl's state-appointed guardian (Yorick van Wageningen), who abused her, stole from her and terrorized her. Her attempts to avenge herself would make a movie of their own.

Zaillian's script comes down to a series of fraught scenes between his leads and a distinctive gallery of supporting characters, given weight by Stellan Skarsgard, Robin Wright and the iconic London actor Steven Berkoff. These people inhabit a world with no boring people. By providing Mikael with his own small cottage on the island, Henrik Vanger isolates him in a vulnerable situation, which sinks in as he realizes he's probably sharing the island with a murderer.

There's also the problem of why Henrik continues to receive watercolors of wildflowers on his birthday, a tradition that his niece began and inexplicably has continued after her death. If you subtract computers, geeks, goth girls, nose piercings, motorcycles and dragon tattoos, what we have at the bottom is a classic Agatha Christie plot. The island works as a sealed room. I realize most people will be seeing the story for the first time with this version. Because it worked for me, I suspect it will work better for them, because everything will be new. I'm happy to have seen both. If I had a choice of seeing one or the other for the first time, I'd choose the 2009 version. It seems closer to the bone, with a less confident surface. Even the Swedish dialogue adds to the effect; in English, the characters are concealing secrets but not so uncannily concealing themselves.

The actor, who played the memorable role of Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe from 2008 to 2019, shared an incident about the Avengers cast members getting tattoos. While promoting his latest film Oppenheimer, along with director Christopher Nolan in a WIRED interview, Downey named the one cast member who refused to get the matching tattoo, while also divulging another who was apprehensive but ultimately acquiesced.

The question, which was asked by Oppenheimer director Christopher Nolan, led to Downey candidly showing his Avengers tattoo before sharing his experiences with co-stars during their time together on a press tour for 2018's Avengers: Infinity War. Known for his humorous and straightforward approach, Downey revealed an interesting bonding ritual among the original six Avengers cast members: Chris Evans (Captain America), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Mark Ruffalo (Hulk), and himself.

The Avengers, released back in 2012, marked the beginning of an immensely successful multi-billion-dollar film franchise. The chemistry among the original cast members has been a subject of fascination for fans over the years. While some fans might be curious about the reason behind Ruffalo's decision to skip the tattoo ritual, the actor's playful banter with Downey highlights the strong bond that remains among these esteemed actors. Robert Downey Jr.'s witty responses once again reminded fans why he will forever be associated with his on-screen charismatic Tony Stark from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Downey plays the role of Lewis Strauss in Oppenheimer. The film has gained universal acclaim with praise for Downey's performance and has already grossed over $550 million at the box office, becoming the highest-grossing WWII movie of all time, adding to the list of the actor's box office triumphs. However, his tattoo will ensure he'll never forget his time with the Avengers.

Warning: contains spoilers for AXE Judgment Day #6!The official epilogue to Marvel Comics' recent crossover event AXE Judgment Day seemingly sees the Avengers taking a dig at the cast tattoos that were revealed ahead of David Ayer's Suicide Squad, as Earth's Mightiest Heroes consider toppling a planet-destroying god as all in a day's work.

Suicide Squad was an adaptation of DC's comic team of captured supervillains, who are blackmailed into acting as a government-approved strikeforce formally known as Task Force X. Ahead of its 2016 release, the movie had intense buzz, not least because of an impressive cast which included Will Smith as Deadshot, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, and Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang. During the film's production, members of the principal cast received commemorative tattoos displaying the word "SKWAD," celebrating the project. Unfortunately, the film largely underperformed with fans and critics alike upon its release, and castmates have since expressed regret at immortalizing their involvement.

Kieron Gillen, Valerio Schiti, Marte Gracia, and Clayton Cowles' AXE Judgment Day #6 brings the massive cosmic event to an end, culminating the events of the Avengers and X-Men's collaboration with the ancient Eternals to defeat the infamous Progenitor Celestial. In the aftermath of their own losses, the remaining heroes attempt to take a breather and begin their life anew on the path to return to the status quo. While others are in mourning, founding Avenger Iron Man suggests moving back to their classic Avengers Mansion but is ultimately convinced by his other teammates to stay within their Celestial mountain base as a tribute to their greatest "victory" yet. However, hero Brandy Selby aka Starbrand offers her own method of honoring their recent accomplishment in the form of matching tattoos for each member of the team. Unfortunately, Starbrand's older contemporaries are not quite as receptive to the suggestion, shrugging off both the idea of getting tattoos as a group and the idea that the Celestial was a big enough threat to warrant such a reaction.

It's hard not to read this as a jab at Suicide Squad, as Nighthawk and Captain Marvel shoot down the idea of celebrating a superhero team's world-saving victory with matching tattoos. Notably, Nighthawk has a history as a deliberate Batman parody in Marvel stories, meaning that it's effectively a character who appeared in the Suicide Squad movie (played by Ben Affleck) who flatly turns down the suggestion. Captain Marvel's argument that the Avengers face too many cosmic threats to make this one special shows why the Avengers might consider themselves above the celebration that accompanied the Suicide Squad's big-screen debut.

The first Suicide Squad film may not have become the pop culture juggernaut that fans or the cast expected, but its legacy goes on - both in the ways subsequent DCEU movies utilized the characters it introduced, and in the tattoos adorning its cast - whether the Avengers approve or not.

Their bond is forever. The cast of Avengers: Infinity War has made their love for each other and their film permanent with matching tattoos! Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Chris Hemsworth and Jeremy Renner headed to East Side Ink in New York City together to get tattoos in honor of their hit movie.

Five of the original "Avengers" cast members got tattoos dedicated to the film franchise after wrapping on "Avengers: Infinity War." The tattoo was Scarlett Johansson's idea, and she was the first one to get inked alongside Chris Evans. Jeremy Renner and Robert Downey Jr. followed suit, and Chris Hemsworth was eventually "bullied" into doing it too.
