Taylor Swift sings the song from a first-person perspective, making the "All Too Well" meaning her story. The lyrics of the "All Too Well" 10-minute version start with her memory of visiting her boyfriend's sister's place. The description of the weather fits the timeline of her relationship with Gyllenhaal, as the pair started dating in October 2010. Her lover's sister could be Maggie Gyllenhaal, who confirmed then that she did have Swift in her home for dinner.
Swift's additional lyrics then come in, focusing on an entirely new incident where she expected him to admit that things are getting serious between them. But, the guy never did. Instead, she accuses him of denying the true nature of their relationship, refusing to call it love. The last three lines in this part of "All Too Well" get metaphorical, but songwriter/actress Taylor Swift could be referring to the man's effort to reconcile months after their split. Interestingly, the song "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together," is also supposedly about Gyllenhaal, which would check out with the idea behind the "All Too Well" Jake Gyllenhaal controversy.
All in all, his nervous jumping of topics doesn't paint the star in a good light. He had a whole lot more to say about cyberbullying than he did to explain why and how "All Too Well" wasn't about him. While some fans accepted his response, others were much more scrupulous and refused to let the issue go. Taylor Swift herself hasn't said much about the song, so it's really up to the listener to decide whether it's about Jake Gyllenhaal, another relationship she had, or her relationship with her fanbase.
The song is about the feelings you experience when having to move on from a relationship. The singer finds himself lost ("what is this place?"), and reflects through the first verse about the simplicity and somewhat disillusioning reality of how easily people fall in and out of love. Realizing he messed up, he tries to understand and find a way to make amends.
However, the chorus shows that despite his efforts, he wakes up alone now. He longs for the sense of belonging he used to have in his significant other ("I want to see your face and know I've made it home.") He acknowledges he has done all he can, but he is still "painting flowers," aka is still in love with, the other person.
The second verse reflects on how opening up in a relationship can hurt you if it goes wrong. The singer tries to open up his eyes, hoping it has all been a nightmare, but again, the chorus assures that this is his new reality. The bridge tells us that while he heard his significant other's reasons for leaving, the singer feels like he's going insane without them by his side; the final chorus emphasizes how frustrated, tired, and hurt he is without them there any longer.
He repeats that he is still painting flowers for them several times before the song ends, reminding us that feelings of affection still linger long after things change.
This song is about a person and he/she (lets just call them a he) is lost and confused because he has showed how in love he is with this girl but she just can't seem to love him in return, they are not happy together but the guy can't seem to understand what he did to have her not love him. He really wants to be with her, despite that he is not gaining love in return. But, he is still in love with her that he still tries to please her and win her over (this is symbolized by the lyrics "i am still painting flowers for you"). Because he is still painting her pretty pictures of flowers he is showing her that he still cares about her.
