Hello, friends of the Prairie Food Co-op ~
As you may know, the Steering Committee is diligently working to put together our Articles of Incorporation so we can all move forward with other official business. In order to establish our cooperative corporation, however, we need to convene an interim Board of Directors. It's customary for the Steering Committee to act as the interim board but we currently only have 4 members and would like to see 7 - 9 people serve in this way. At our Steering Committee meeting last night we decided to request at least one member from each of the other committees to serve with us on the board. We understand that too many meetings are difficult to attend so at this point, you wouldn't be required to attend more.....unless you would like to because the Steering Committee would welcome you with open arms!
One other detail I should specify is that in order to legally incorporate, we need to hire an attorney to the cost of $1500. The most feasible and legally responsible way to raise this money is to require the board members to purchase our member-owner shares up front to fund this need. With 7 board members it would be $250 each (allowing Kathy & Jerry to only purchase one share for their family) and with 9 board members, $187.50. This money would be well spent and go towards if not cover all of your future member-owner share!
Our goal is to incorporate before the new year so we need to have our interim board in place within the next couple weeks and then be in touch with our attorney about moving forward. Please take some time to think about this (but not too much time! :) and let me know if you're willing to serve in this way.
Many thanks for all your work!
On behalf of the Steering Committee,
stephanie wills eby (who just re-read what I wrote & I sound very official. ha!)
