Hey list,

I took the liberty of reaching out to Troy Unrau, a fellow involved with
KDE, regarding a presentation on KDE SC 4.4, which is undergoing testing
for release shortly after our February meeting.

I know I'm rather excited after reading about some of the new features
in 4.4, and I look forward to an opportunity to have somebody involved
in the process show us not only new features, but the benefits that KDE
offers.

Troy would like a bit of feedback, however, on what kind of presentation
we want covered. I myself have trouble defining a demographic for us as
we seem to be a rather diverse group. So please send some suggestions in
on your curiosities or interests regarding either KDE, SC 4.4.

Dialogue is below.

Hi Chris,

This is actually rather convenient for me, as I'm just down Cheapside
from the college. Anyway, yes, 4.4 will be tagged on February 3rd, a
Wednesday, coinciding perfectly with your meeting. (It won't be
publicly announced until a week later.)

I could spin my talk in a number of ways, depending on what you think
the audience would like - rather than simply regurgitating the SC 4.4
feature guide, which will be available on the internet anyway, perhaps
something more tutorial-like would be useful to your audience - I'd
use 4.4 in my demonstration, and certainly explain many of the new
features anecdotally. However, the focus of such a demonstration could
be any number of things, depending on what's useful to the group.

So help me define the topic by defining the audience: are they
administrators, hobbyists, web developers? What distros tend to be
used? Are there many KDE software users, Gnome users, or am I talking
to an audience of command line junkies :P. Are there any recurring
issues that come up during meetings regarding KDE software that I
might be able to address? How many people typically attend? How long
should my demonstration be?

I tend not to use slides, and if you were at my talk at OnLinux, you
may recall that I simply spoke while demonstrating on a live system -
it gives my presentations more interactive forum-like feel typical of
the way that KDE events are run. I would require a wired connection if
I'm demonstrating anything using the network, and my laptop uses VGA
for video out.

I will be at Camp KDE, our annual North American meeting, from January
15-22. I'll see if I can grab a t-shirt or something to give away.

Cheers

Ok I will ask the first question.
Why would i switch to KDE. I am not asking for a war :-) I am just asking what are the prows and cons of the desktops.

And to Chris -- Thanks for the intro to packaging last night. As you probably guessed I have to jump in and try it then I will have lots of questions.

That's what the presentation is for :)

I'm currently a Gnome user as well, but I've found in my experience that KDE seems to be more tightly integrated. They tend to write more functionality into reusable components that can be embedded elsewhere. This is part of what gives the Plasma panel and widget system it's power.

It is highly configurable, and they underwent a great purge and rewrite with version 4 to clean up and improve their system. There are also some bold moves underway to integrate some semantic desktop functionality in the future, I believe. There is a lot of effort going in to KDE, and speaking as a Gnome user, i know I don't get to see or experience this effort myself.

I think the opportunity to see another desktop environment in use, as well as discuss the merits will be worthwhile. It is difficult to really evaluate a DE when you only try it for a few hours on a livecd as your data isn't in it, it's not doing your email, etc. Here we will be able to see an example of how KDE is actually used, and what it can do for us.

No problem. I'm glad you found it useful.

What was the name of the application you were looking to package? I want to whip up a tutorial using that as an example.

Hi,
First I want to say thanks to Chris and Doug. Now, for the first time I
am actually able to completely replace MS-Win with Linux. I still have
some tweaking to do but it is close. I has been just over 10 years and
thanks to "Wine." Yes, I use an app. written for Windows and there is no
suitable Open Source App. to replace it. The 10 years speaks of my
skills and time schedule. I will not be able to attend the Feb. meeting.
Again thank you Guys. I will post my "tweaking" questions later.
Bill

Bill,

Regarding your Wife's laptop, I added a comment to the relavent bug in Ubuntu's bug tracker. Here is a link:

Hi Chris,
We started Ubuntu on my Wife's laptop and it works just fine. The screen
refresh is slower for most calls, but for the game programs, (Suduku,
etc) that She uses, the screen refresh rate is more than fast enough. On
her behalf, thanks
Bill
