If you would like to backup entire hard disk, partitions, or files, it's highly recommended to try AOMEI Backupper, and then enable recovery environment in Windows boot options menu just in case you have to restore data from the recovery environment.

I want make a backup/recovery disk for my existing Windows 8 and then set up a dual boot configuration without erasing the existing installation, to be able to resume my work on my day job. I didn't receive any backup/recovery disk with the ultrabook, hence re-installing Windows is not an option for me.

The glory days of netbooks have passed. But if you own an Asus EeePC with Atom CPU sooner or later you have to reinstall Windows 7 Starter. The problem is that Asus ships EeePC with recovery DVD but the netbook do not have an optical drive. Creation of bootable USB flash drive from ISO of the recovery disk is difficult and the installation fails because of the following error message: "Please insert the recovery CD/DVD and then click OK".
