Akeeba Backup Core is the most widely used open-source backup component for the Joomla! CMS. Its mission is simple: create a site backup that can be restored on any Joomla!-capable server, making it ideal not only for backups but also for site transfers or even deploying sites to your clients' servers.

Akeeba Backup creates a full backup of your site in a single archive. The archive contains all the files, a database snapshot and an installer similar in function to the standard Joomla! installer. The backup and restore process is AJAX powered to avoid server timeouts, even with huge sites. Alternatively, you can make a backup of only your database, or only your files. Akeeba Backup is the reliable, easy to use, open source backup solution for your Joomla! site.

Note: The Akeeba Backup Core component, its documentation and its video tutorials are free of charge. Support for the software and an edition with advanced features (not listed above) are, however, not free of charge. If you are filing a review please make sure that it concerns the Akeeba Backup Core edition and the features we make available free of charge, in line with the Joomla Extension Directory's rules. Thank you!

An extension which is around since 2006. Millions of downloads. Countless praise in the Joomla! Extensions Directory. Three J.O.S.C.A.R. awards. A single goal: backup, restore and transfer your site in a snap!

If you just transferred or restored your site, Akeeba Backup remembers the output directory path of the site that was backed up. In this case, simply go to Akeeba Backup's Configuration page, find the Output Directory field and enter [DEFAULT_OUTPUT] (all caps, include the brackets) and click on Save.

It is more like a friendly warning or you can say a security warning from the developers (not a functional warning). And it is about a relatively insecure Output Directory location set for akeeba backup files.

If you set the output directory as the default directory then you will have this warning. It is because according to the Akeeba developers (due to their understandable paranoia) the default back-up output directory is a too well known directory for hackers and it can be exploited. Thus the developers are suggesting to set an output directory for the akeeba backup files other than the Default directory!

Akeeba is a popular plugin for Joomla web hosting. It automates the process of keeping your files safe without having to manually backup the Joomla website. It has a lot of tools and functionality, which is why many people trust the module.

The control panel in Akeeba Backup for Joomla has a variety of settings to customize. Profile management, automatic scheduling, excluding files and directories and more can be changed from this screen.

I tried editing the configuration.php file with the database info, but it does not help. Also, since I am trying to restore from backup, I have simply created a blank database and am trying to connect to it.

If so you can't unzip it - you'll need to download kickstart.php. Put that in the root where you want the backup to appear along with the backup. Then go to and that should get you through the installation process.

Note - if you were going from a local host to a remote host you may need to also add a database user on your remote site (along with that blank database, and give that user access to that database). Also check the permissions on the folder you're installing it to.

For example in a hosted scenario, if you've unzipped all your files in the root directory of your domain, go to "www .yourdomain.com" - no need to put index.php on the end of it. Then the installation process will start without issue. You're seeing that because you're trying to access a page directly and the SQL Database connection hasn't been established yet.

Is there any way to reduce the size of this database by clearing out some old entries or something like that? It is not a pressing issue, but because I am not supposed to navigate away from the open tab while Akeeba backup is running, the seven minutes or so it takes to complete the backup seems like a long time. Another similar site we own that does not use Acymailing takes about 30 seconds to backup, and the resulting backup file is about the same size.

Acymailing automaticly removes the old statistics each time the cron is triggered. For this you need to have the Automated tasks enabled in Acymailing->Configuration->License. In case it's not active, activate it. Given the huge amount of records in the statistic table I'm not sure if these will all be deleted at once or in batches across several times the cron is being triggered.

Before I open a ticket - what would happen if we archive (somehow) and delete older emails? Would that clean up that database? Is that list what is used to generate reports like this screenshot?

Maybe also worth to mention: The only thing, which has changed with the backup: The domain is now pointing to a new directory, where the Joomla installation is. In this Joomla installation, there is matomo installed in a sub-directory.

If you need to review your backups, go to the Akeeba Backup by clicking on the COMPONENTS menu item near the top of the screen. Then click on Akeeba Backup. Here you can manage the backups that have been made with Akeeba. You can also create a backup from this point. You can use Akeeba Kickstart to restore a backup as per the instructions below.

i am using joomla 1.5 i have downloaded my website backup file (.jpa extension) using Akeeba now want to restore my site another PC.So i want kickstart for joomla 1.5.plz provide me suitable kickstart.

I have made a full backup of the live site with the latest version of Akeeba Backup. The site has has two backup files totalling about 4gb. I used FTP to transfer these files to the PC where XAMMP is installed. I placed the files along with KICKSTART.PHP a folder called restore inside the htdocs area for the joomla web app. The C: path looks like this:

I made it through that just fine, then I clicked the Green button to Clean Up. After getting past the database login info, I got the message that the database was restoring. It showed 11.08 meg. Before any progress is shown on the progress bar, I get this message:

"Database Restoration
An error occurred while restoring the database. The error message can be found below. Click on the x button at the top right of this dialog message to close it and return o the database restoration page. "

I know I have the server name (localhost) working and the password working because if I change either to something I know is wrong I get a message back right away that says it cannot connect to the SQL server.

If you have phpMyAdmin on both, then an SQL dump and import should be the quick way around this failure to restore the database. Assuming the files did restore OK of course.Never assume that. Do a comparison.
