Ladies and Gentlemen, I will be streaming a lojbanic lesson in the terminator-centric style that I used to use on IRC at roughly 10:30 or 11:00ish EST tonight, Monday the 2nd at twitch.tv/lojbo. Come check it out, and the Too Many Cooks rule will be in effect! ;)

kribacr, can you take some time to help me with the YouTube lesson videos? I have a script set up (based on the wave lessons) from Aliselyn and so there's concrete material I want to record. I'd love to have you do a conversation with me and say some examples so it's not just me speaking.

Also, ace video. Watched a bit of it.

Hey dude!

I remember you giving lessons in ##ckule, years ago. I never had the
time to really properly learn lojban, but I'm definitely going to do
that one day, and I'm going to tune in on your stream as well.

Great to see you're still out there teaching people. Thanks you for all
your work :)

Just click the twitch.tv link he provided (http://twitch.tv/lojbo) and
you'll find two videos there.
It's a pity the chat doesn't get recorded as well.

Nice, but if you are going to teachlojban audially, you need to make sure you pronounce the name of the language properly.  Just like the people at conlangery (and for that matter, many others), you are pronouncing it as if it rhymes with the English "can".  It does not.  It rhymes with "con".

I disagree. The pronunciation in English can be whatever he wants it to be. It's only in Lojban that "lojban" has a particular pronunciation.

Well, it irks him when people pronounce "o" with a diphthong (as well it should, since it's wrong), and it irks me when people pronounce "lojban" wrong even in English.  Call it a peccadillo.... (so, watched, the first lesson so far...)

I'm sorry, at what point do I pronounce it like this? I always pronounce it correctly, unless doing it in jest.

Hmmm... maybe I was mistaken, but I don't want to have to relisten  to all 107 minutes.  If so, I apologize.   However, you did definitely mispronounce "Loglan", which has the same vowelization as lojban.

Nice presentation, btw. One tip, though, you might want to use written notes next time.. there was a lot of times when you appeared toasted, but probably because it was so late at night.  Like when you kept going "kuh-tuka, kuh-tuka, so ummm.. yeah" No problems about when you were asked questions, because then you had to think on your feet, but at other times, you should really know what you you are going to say.  (Really would be also nice if your vocabulary was better, especially with the words you yourself brought up.  It makes it seem like it's really NOT easy to learn....)

But, you know, not like I'm actually putting my money where my mouth is, so I can't critique you TOO heavily :-)

Looking forward to listening to the rest, when I have more time.

Even so, the name is a portmanteau of "logical language". I see no issue with saying "loglan" like wood local-network.

I heard JCB himself say "LOG-luhn" when I phoned him once. It really took me by surprise because I'd always said it and heard it in my head as "Log-lan", sounding almost like "Log" + "land".

That is VERY weird, since it breaks the isomorphism he himself created.  (And I learned the language back in '75, before the introduction of "h" into the language, and I never pronounced it as anything other than LOHG-lahn), although I admit I have never heard JCB say it.

Oh, another aside to Jameson -- you assert in your lesson hyperbolically that no one uses mi'a, mi'o, ma'a and do'o.  Not true.  While I  don't use do'o very much, I most certainly the other three a LOT.

In the third part, you kept arguing that the initial "i" or "u" in ii and uu is pronounced differently than they are in other diphthongs, but it explicitly is EXACTLY the same (see chapter 3)  aionys is correct.  There are NO exceptions. "ii" is NOT irregular.  They have palatal onglides.  They are formed exactly the same in front of the same vowel as they are in front of different vowels.

I hope you go back and correct what you left them with that "crane" means "back". It means "front", in fact.  My favorite false friend is bistro (ice controller).
