Fang was the founder and first editor of the journal Philosophia
Mathematica, and is probably best remembered by logicians and
philosophers of logic for his debate with Irving Copi on the "errors"
in the definition of material implication and for his polemics against
what he termed the "Frege industry" and strong opposition to what he
called the "Logik uber alles" of those who work in that "industry".
His estate informed me that he lost all of his personal records in a
house fire some 10-12 years ago, and that the only account his family
now has of his life is to be supplied by a copy which I provided to
the estate two days ago of the article “Joon Fang of Jaean — A
Retrospective”, Modern Logic 3 (1993), 145-155.
Although he and I had strong disagreements on the nature and relevance
of formal logic and my defense of mathematical logic, I am told by the
executrix that despite this disagreement, Prof. Fang very much
appreciated that article.
