Hi folks,
I’m looking for a 49-key MIDI controller/keyboard as a college student at Berklee. I’m a pianist and vocalist, and I feel that anything smaller than 49 keys wouldn’t be enjoyable for my complex jazz chords, LOL
Since I plan to use it mainly on my desk, it should be compact. If space and portability weren’t a concern, I’d go with 61 keys, but I think 49 is the ideal choice. I don’t need tons of extra features—what matters most to me is good key action and velocity sensitivity, plus solid compatibility with Logic Pro and Reaper. It must have a sustain pedal input (I’ll buy the pedal separately), and I’d prefer it to be USB-powered so my MacBook alone can power it without an external source.
I’ve also heard that some MIDI keyboards offer DAW integration features. If I go with one of those, they need to be accessible for blind users. Changing octaves should also be quick and easy since it’s not a full 88-key board.
My budget is $250. What would you recommend? Also, feel free to share your thoughts on whether I really need 49 keys, or if fewer keys with easy octave shifting and step recording would be enough.
Thanks!
