Hi all.

I think I've only exported from Garage Band at this point, but I imagine it's the same basic idea. When I'm playing an instrument, particularly if I have an effect like distortion, the volume is at a decent level, in fact if anything it could be slightly louder. But when I export as an m4a and play it in something like VLC or Foobar2000, it is significantly louder. How can I make these volumes match?

I'm worried about this with Logic, because that's what I'm using now, I just haven't had the time to get to grips with it and make something yet, I've been kind of busy. But I'm hoping to have some more time freed up to start digging into things soon. Is there a tutorial on, I dunno, volumes I guess? I assume you can change the monitor volume? When I say "monitor volume", I'm using software instruments so far. So the volume I hear while laying down a track in Logic is quieter than the volume of that same track exported to an m4a.

I'd be interested in all of it really, potentially boosting the volume I hear while tracking, lowering the volume of exported files to match the volume I hear while tracking, just really a better understanding of what's going on and what affects it all. If there's something to google I can go do my own homework too.

Thanks in advance for any help, you guys have been really awesome.

This is a rabbit hole with an answer not as simple as you would hope as it involves an explanation of signal flow and peak/loudness levels. Short answer for now while you are still in the early days, set normalization to on and it should bring up the level of your exported file. It raises the loudest part of the track to be as loud as it can be with out clipping and raises the volume of the rest of the track to remain relative to said loudest point.
