Hi All,

I thought I would forward the below note from the ProTools list as I did not see this info posted here.

I hope this is ok.

As for my own experiences with the Komplete Kontrol and the libraries. Believe it or not, I have not had time to set this all up yet, in terms of software / updates for Komplete 10 Ultimate and the keyboard itself. So I have nothing to report on it yet. Go figure. My apologies. :) It’s just that the world will not be denied, so right now it is looking like I may have time / sighted assistance mid to late next week.

Wish me luck! :) I really want to get this up and going! :)

Cheers!

Cara

Some of you undoubtedly heard about the recent progress with the accessibility of Native Instruments Komplete 10 with the self-voicing aspect and the s-series controllers. Frankly, I'm somewhat surprised that there hasn't been more discussion either here or on the Logic list. Understandably, it isn't a cheap library and the additional necessary expense of the controller probably makes it something for which many folks have to budget and purchase in time. Again, however, it's curious that there hasn't been more talk of it on the list as it relates to an accessible music library. Granted, it was only officially released a few days ago so I suppose there aren't too many that have access. For those interested, Andre Louis will be doing a live Q&A this Saturday. You can listen through the following link:
http://3.onj.me:8000/komplete.m3u

Andre's not a Pro Tools user, to the best of my knowledge, but the information is entirely relevant as the accessibility is a function of the self-voicing aspect of the software along with the S-series controller.

I'll probably do some type of audio walk-through as it specifically relates to Pro Tools. I received the controller and software this morning. As luck would have it, starting this afternoon, I have a series of daily sessions that run all the way into July 4th weekend so I won't have any significant time to spend with the setup but I'll certainly attempt to make some progress here and there before or after sessions.

For those who already have controllers and are considering Komplete, it might be a good idea to simply go for the smallest of the S-series which is the 25-key controller. This would facilitate all of the navigation and it would keep the cost to a minimum.

OK, I'll post further messages as things take shape.

Slau

Hey Everyone,

So I installed the 1.6 update for komplete Kontrol yesterday, and I’ve had a little time to mess around. My initial impressions are quite positive.

First off, once you perform the update, which is still a process which requires sighted assistance, unfortunately, the process of enabling speech output is straight forward. Once an instance of Komplete Kontrol is inserted into a Logic project, you press and hold the shift key on the top left of the keyboard and press the preset up button, which is on the top right. Speech output starts. As was mentioned before, this speech output is the system voice which can be adjusted in system preferences.

Here’s a quick summary of how things work. You press the browse button to bring up the instrument browser. There are 8 knobs in the middle of the keyboard controls. Each knob acts as a filter to help search for a specific sound or instrument. One very cool thing is that if you’re not sure what a knob does, simply touch it and you’ll hear it’s function announced. The first knob on the left lets you choose the category. The available categories are all categories, drums and percussion, sampled instruments, synthesizers, and other. the second knob let’s you choose what product, for instance Abby Roads drums or Massive. The function of the other knobs is determined by the product you’ve picked. All of the presets are announced as you scroll through them. One thing I noticed is to make sure not to hold your hand on a knob, or the function of the knob will continue to be announced. This can be annoying if you’re trying to hear what preset you’ve selected.

Once a sound is loaded, the knobs are then mapped to specific on screen functions, like filter cutoff, resonance, reverb settings, etc. The thing I love is that just like in the preset browser, you can touch a knob to find out what it does. The thing I don’t love is that the change in values is not announced. This would be a great thing to hope for in a future update. Suffice it to say, I’m thrilled to have greater access to this very large library of instruments and sound libraries.

I know it’s been a rocky road with native Instruments in the past, but I can’t help but applaud them for implementing this into their main product line. My biggest concern was how well it would work. I assumed that an initial set of accessibility features would leave much to be desired, but I think this is a fantastic first step in the right direction.

One other thing worth mentioning is that they’ve been putting great effort into unifying the user experience of both the Komplete control and Maschine product lines. I’d love to see this type of accessibility included in future maschine updates as well. I’m thinking it wouldn’t be too difficult, as maschine already utilizes the same hardware browser functionality.

Hope that is helpful for someone:)

Hi,

To add to this and make some comments about the initial cost of ownership, I’d agree that it’s a superb start. You don’t have to buy Komplete 10 or Komplete 10 Ultimate - if you buy any of the keyboards you get Komplete 10 Select bundled with it. Select contains 10 products from the Complete range, so you’ve got plenty to play with. Additionally, if you own any 3rd-party products that support the NKS standard (anything from Arturia’s VCollection 4 or 5 product lines, etc.) then you get the same level of interaction as for the Komplete products. There’s a link on NI’s Komplete Kontrol page that lists the manufacturers and products that are currently signed up to support NKS, together with products waiting in the wings.

Finally, if you don’t want to get a DAW involved, you can run the Komplete Kontrol application in stand-alone mode and get the same accessibility features. Absolutely marvellous.

This is one of the most exciting developments in music accessibility I’ve seen in years and I’ve already had a great deal of fun with it.

Best wishes.
