Hi,

Quick question: With LM, has anyone experienced problem with the Toggle Stacks command only announcing (track name) expanded, but nnot doing anything, and not announcing or performing closing stack?

I’m on norwegian keyboard setup but using the key shown in the related Keyboard Maestro makro.

Logic 11.2.2/Sonoma 14.8/most recent version of LM.

Best,
John André

Hi John

Interesting behavior. As long as logic pro is in english, this shouldn’t be an issue.
So couple of questions. If you used LM before, has this worked normally or you always had issue with it?
Does it behave the same if you have multiple track stacks in your project, that is, does same happen only on one track stack or any?
Lastly, although I use multiple keyboard layouts myself and haven’t noticed any issues, as none of them is norwegian, I’d kindly ask you to try US layout and see will it cause the same issue.
If yes, we’ll investigate further to see why it doesn’t work on your end.

Cheers

Hi,

No, I started to test LM this weekend, so no previous experience.

•I added US english to the keyboard menu so that I can switch between norwegian and english sets. And that changed all.

The stacks expanded and collapsed as expected and it was correctly announced. Also, setting locators by playhead, which also was impossible with the norwegian keyboard setup, suddenly worked as expected with the US english setup.

So there is absolutely something going on.

As for your questions, the problem with stacks was the same even if there was one or more stacks, and no matter if they were first or in the middle of the track list.

Is it possible to have the keyboard setup switch by application? It's not an optional solution, since it will be impossible to write norwegian letters in names and notes in Logic if the keyboard setup is switched to US english, but it could be a temporary solution.

I'll appreciate if you look into this.

Best,
John André

I am wondering if you might be able to have the keyboard set up switch by application if you use VoiceOver activities?

Hi,

I have tried that, but the keyboard settings for each activity is only related to shortcuts for keyboards commands / so no setting of keyboard layout set there. Too bad, since it in that case would switch by app.

But thanks for the suggestion!

Best,
John André

Hi.

Next thought. Turn on VO utilities general portable preferences. Create two portable preference files, one with the settings you want to switch from, and the second with settings you want to switch to. Save both. Switch back and forth as needed?

Or, thanks to google:

Yes, it is possible to switch back and forth between different system settings files
, especially for individual applications, by manually swapping the files or using scripting to automate the process. For system-level settings, this is more complex and risky, but with proper precautions and specific tools, it can be done, though not always recommended.
Switching application settings
  • Manual file replacement: For applications that store their settings in separate files (like  files), you can manually back up your current settings file and then copy a different one into its place.

Aha, it explains everything. Norwegian keyboard layout obviously has different key codes, which usually doesn’t translate well into keyboard shortcuts.

There’s no native mac os option to switch layouts per application, but you can sort this out with keyboard maestro, via action called set keyboard layout.
Do you have any expirience with creating macros with keyboard maestro?

YOU can also use control/space to quickly switch between keyboard layouts as a temporary solution so that you don't have to go through a menu!

Ok fair enough.
Below is the link to the quick keyboard maestro macro which I just made to help with switching between US and your layout. I don’t have that layout myself, so there’s a read me file with instructions on what you need to do in order to make it to work.

Actually i'm not sure, you might have to adjust a keyboard shortcut to switch between layouts, I think I did adjust it, anyway take a look at the system settings

I doubt. It does speak what it should, but I doubt that it will switch the layout if you don’t let it know which layout you want.
Personally never used that particular action, so there’s a possibility it does automaticly selects another layout. The mechanism is there in any case.

In case my answer was unclear; I did not use the script, I went to the keyboard settings in the settings app, added US keyboard and checked the box to have the menu available in the status menu. Then I used control-space to switch between the two keyboard setups US and Norwegian. It will toggle through any number of keyboard setups you'd have set in the settings app.

John André

But LM should be working with any keyboard setup, what can be done with that?

Ideally yes, but in practice, it’s not that simple and easy.
Many keyboard layouts have different set of key codes, which means that it can’t be universally made to work, then has to be customized individually.
Even logic pro itself offers you different key commands presets for different keyboard layouts from exact same reason.
Can something be done about it? Yes for sure, but as I already said, it’s not some simple tweak. In any case, it can be considered for the future.
