Hi guys. I am minstly recording piano. Hymns, choruses and gospel songs.
I would like to add basic drums, percussion, a bass guitar etc. here and there.

I have played around with the session players a little bit. And I’ve heard of drum machine designer.
But what do you think would be the best option if I just want to add basic drums and percussion with some base to some of my songs. I could add some strings, guitars, cello, whatever, to my songs using my keyboard's own sounds or software synths from Logic, but drums is a bit tricky because most drum sounds out there is not really suitable for piano gospel songs.
Mostly I just use a kick, a side stick, and now and then a snare or high hat etc.

What option would be the best?

Thanks
Dewald

When I've done drums I've loaded a drum kit and played the parts in. It's not nearly as daunting as it might sound, each piece corresponds to a midi note on your keyboard. The only caveat (in the music I know now) is world kits but they aren't under the drum kits. All the drum kits use the same notes for each piece: bass, snare open rim shot, rim tap, each tom, all the other symbols etc. The Blind Logic Pro has tutorials on how to do the session players, I just haven't learned how to do them yet. But lots of people are really successful with those.

Whether you use the session player or play the drums in yourself they are using all the same drums sounds the difference is literally whether you want to play it in yourself or whether you want to direct and edit the session player, Or put another way whether its a regular MIDI region or A session player region, and there is nothing stopping you from having a blend of both on the track.
So whether you want acoustic drums or electronic drums, just go through the library and find a sound that works for you. If you pick a Multi Channel version of a kit, open the track stack and on the overhead trac is where you find the instance of DrumKit designer. Open  drum kit designer and you can go through and build a custom kit choosing the snare,, toms, kicks, cymbals, etc.  You can do this on the stereo track versions of the drum kit but your choices of kit pieces seem more limited there.
This old tutorial covers some stuff to know if new to Logic.

Wow. I can just go into my library and find Producer's kit? I didn't see anything like that?
Can you use the session drummer, and swop out pieces for it too? Or does it only work on the manual entry mode?

Yes, you can swap everything out so long as you’re in Drum Kit designer like described on TOM’s channel on Youtube. I would learn to use session players if I had to do standard drums more often, but since most of what I use is world kits, we can’t use those in the session player, the pieces are all different for different purposes. They really have improved the session drummers though in recent versions, just from what I’ve heard on the Blind Logic Pro Youtube channel and others.

They were called producer kits in previous versions, now called multi channel kits. They are located in the same place, all the way at the end of the Acoustic Drum Category.
Yes you can swap out kit pieces if usin session player but the choices will be a bit different.  As I said before the session player functionality is really tied to the region not the track or theVirtual instrument on said track so much. It’s just Drum kit designer displays the kit pieces differently if  it’s a stereo instance of the plug in loaded vs a Multi Channel or Multi Output instance of the plug in loaded.

Ok. All the terminology goes over my head a bit, but I'll play around with it.
What method and workflow is the easiest and fastest to do? I've been playing around in the session player's editor, and you can get a bit lost in there. It's almost like a maze, and many settings to play around with until you get your exact rhythm and sounds.

Well let’s start with what terminology is still confusing you and go from there. It’s really a matter of do you want to play it in or do you want to direct the session player. IF the session player the bulk of it is broken up into  2 sections the rhythm for the kick and. Snare, and the rhythm for the cymbals. And which cymbals are used. In the main section the second part is relating to fills and swings. Get familiar wit that and the intensity and complexity sliders before worrying about the other -T.O.M

Ok. Like I said, drums isn't such a big thing for mymusic, but sometimes I'd just like to add a bit of rhythm.
Sometimes when playing in the beats myself I can mess up, and quantize doesn't always work.
But it always takes time to change the session drummer to how I like it, and even then, it sometimes ads in bits that I don't want, like fills in places where I don't want fills etc.

Like anything else, it takes time to learn how to direct the session players. Fills can be adjusted with the fills amount and fill complexity sliders. And the overall complexity slider plays a hand as well. You can also convert to MIDI and edit the performance in the piano roll or event list as well.
Quantize is a best guess based on the grid and where the off note landed so sometimes it moves the note forward when it should move it back or vice versa. Once again you can open the piano roll or event list and  move the off note or notes to where they need to go. If you understand bars and beats it’s probably just a matter of time to get used to the workflow for doing the fine editing. There is also just playing it in small section to get it right instead of trying to do it in one long pass.

Thanks Steve. Really appreciate your help.
One or two last things I've strugglhd with today.
I noticed that sometimes I have to enable Logic Magician manually a couple of times per session.
It would just go off without me noticing.
The musical typing keyboard doesn't work well with LM on, so there I disable it on purpose.
Another thing was that my library, when searching for a software synth or something, is blank. I interact with the library browser, but when trying to VO down arrow etc., Voiceover doesn't say anything, like there's nothing in my library.

Thanks
Dewald

Yes there are a number of times Logic Magician will disable it self without re-enabling. A lot of times it will re-enable it self if you follow specific steps  like when choosing a plug in or send. However things like opening the Key commands list or if you press shift Y to jump into the library search field, then it won’t re-enable itself.
Speaking of which, I will bet good money you have something in the search field and thats why your library shows as empty., it could be a space or a punctuation or something , either way verify that the search field is blank by going to it and backspacing or forward deleting (FN Backspace) to clear it.
Yes unfortunately some of the modal windows like Musical typing or some of the ones in the session players will not auto disable Logic Magician at this time due to some limitations of scripting.

Ok, yes ... it's a learning curb. I just need to practice more.
I'm still slowly working my way through the tutorials.
I still open the mixer in a new window to work with plugins and sends, but that's because I haven't gotten to listen to the sends tutorials with LM yet. 😅

But I always make sure that no other windows are open.
Sometimes when I press T to announce the selected track, or up and down arrows, and voiceover is not announcinganything, I know there is either another window open, the editor is visible, or LM is turned off.
sometime's, while working in the session editor, interacting with sliders and menu items, to select the different presets etc., and go out completely, pressing the space bar to listen, it opens the last menu even if my focuss is away from that menu icon.
But I'll get it.
Thanks for all your help.

This is part of the reason I wanted a document format that supports a table of contents for the documentation. That way one could jump right to the chapter on sends or plug ins. You can also skip to that one in the playlist as well. Wit the editors, like the session player editor, E shows and hides the editor. So I just hide the editor with E then do the thing I need to do while the focus is on the tracks and then press e to show the editor again. Another workflow is TAB. Tab will switch keyboard focus between the editor and the tracks group or the Loop browser and the tracks group.
