Hey everybody.

Yet another question, but probably pretty straightforward.

Control surface recommendations for Logic? In particular I'm interested in something that's easily mappable, e.g. for plugins/instruments that don't already have mappings. Obviously something with default mappings for Logic would be great, but I think most things have this nowadays.

I may as well throw out this question too, I'm planning on getting a Komplete Mk3 keyboard, upgrading from the Mk2. I know it has a lot more mappings, at least for instruments, not sure about plugins like effects, EQ, and so on. I assume I'd still want a control surface, because this doesn't really take care of everything?

While we're talking mapping, anybody have a handy overview of how this works? Do you normally switch pages/banks or something? What I mean is, say I'm in the tracks area, I'm getting volume and pan and all. Then I open a distortion plugin. How am I telling the surface I want that to be controlled now? I assume if you close it and want to change settings you just open it again, e.g. with dash in Logic Magician, and then you change mappings from track controls or whatever to the plugin? Same basic idea should apply for synths or whatever, I imagine.

Thanks for any help!

Not as simple as a question as you may think, but the short and simple answer is the MK III S series native instruments Complete Control keyboards has a universal control mode where it should auto map per plug in. The MK II keyboards can switch between controlling your tracks, for example navigating to the next or previous track and moving back or forward through the timeline one bar at time etc. but then switch to controlling complete control plug ins. As I Understand it, it should now control any plug in in a similar manner so no longer the restriction of it only controlling plug ins loaded into Complete Control. I have no personal experience with this so can’t go into the details of the mechanics of how it works.
While I am game to try this workflow, past experiences has shown me that I don’t generally get along with control surfaces that well, some of that now due in part to how quickly I can pull up or switch between plug ins with Logic Magician. I am also quite comfortable with the typing keyboard key commands and navigating quickly around plug in windows, and something about constantly switching my hands from the control surface to the typing keyboard and back and forth always seemed to slow me down.
With the KK keyboard as your MIDI Controller and control surface though this could be a much better all in one workflow especially if you have a way to switch between different tracks and different plug ins without taking your hands off the KK keyboard, but thats the part I am not sure about, but definitely curious to find out more.
So as it stands right now, if you are planning on an MK III S Series Complete Control keyboard, thats probably the option to consider since you are already using the MK II keyboard.
