Some iOS updates on your iPhone require that you also update watchOS on your Apple Watch. So if you see an alert on your iPhone that says "Update Apple Watch" and "Your Apple Watch software is out of date," you should update to the latest version of watchOS so that your data, including Activity data, continues to sync to your iPhone.

watchOS 10 is the biggest update since the introduction of Apple Watch, and brings a fresh look for virtually every app, new ways to navigate, and a new Smart Stack to display the information you need, right when you need it, from any watch face. It introduces enhanced capabilities for cycling workouts and hiking, a new mental health experience in the Mindfulness app to reflect on your state of mind, and the ability to track the time you spend in daylight.

watchOS 10 introduces two new artistic and joyful watch faces: Palette and Snoopy. The Palette face depicts time in a wide variety of colors using three distinct overlapping layers, and as the time changes, the colors on the display also shift.

Additionally, the beloved comic strip Peanuts comes to life on Apple Watch with a new watch face featuring Snoopy and Woodstock. The characters interact and play with the watch hands, react to the weather conditions in the area, or even get active when the user does a workout.

Apple Watch is a great device for cyclists, with features including automatic Workout reminders, calorimetry for e-biking, and Fall Detection. watchOS 10 takes this popular activity even further with advanced new metrics, views, and experiences.

When a cycling workout is started from Apple Watch in watchOS 10, it will automatically show up as a Live Activity on iPhone and, when tapped, will utilize the full screen. Workout Views, such as Heart Rate Zones, Elevation, Race Route, Custom Workouts, and a new Cycling Speed view, have been optimized for the display size of iPhone, which can be mounted to a bike for convenient, easy viewing during a ride.

Mental health is as important as physical health, and research shows that reflecting on state of mind can help build emotional awareness and resilience. With the Mindfulness app in watchOS 10, users can discreetly and conveniently log their momentary emotions and daily moods. Users can turn the Digital Crown to scroll through engaging, multidimensional shapes to choose how they are feeling, select what is having the biggest impact on them, and describe their feelings.

Myopia, or nearsightedness, is the leading cause of vision impairment globally. To reduce the risk of myopia, the International Myopia Institute recommends children spend at least 80-120 minutes a day outdoors. With watchOS 10, Apple Watch introduces the ability to measure time spent in daylight using the ambient light sensor. Users can view this information in the Health app on iPhone or iPad.

Apple Watch offers enterprise customers features to enhance productivity and safety in the office or in the field, such as hands-free communication and responding to notifications on the go, or Fall Detection on a job site. watchOS 10 introduces support for Mobile Device Management (MDM), enabling enterprise customers to remotely and centrally install apps and configure accounts on a fleet of devices, with features such as passcode enforcement, and configuring Wi-Fi and VPN settings. With this update, Apple Watch can further help improve employee wellness, productivity and health, and safety monitoring.

watchOS 10 includes new APIs for workout app developers that will allow them to create compelling new experiences. The powerful motion sensors on both Apple Watch Series 8 and Apple Watch Ultra can detect rapid changes in velocity and acceleration, such as when swinging a golf club or a tennis racket. Now, developers will have access to this high-frequency motion data, so apps like SwingVision can analyze serve pronation, which is the twisting motion of the forearm, wrist, and hand, and Golfshot can detect small wrist movements to refine a golf swing.

The developer beta of watchOS 10 is available to Apple Developer Program members at developer.apple.com starting today. A public beta will be available to watchOS users next month at beta.apple.com. watchOS 10 will be available this fall as a free software update for Apple Watch Series 4 or later paired with iPhone Xs or later, running iOS 17. Since updating, I've lost a bundle of functions such as waterproofing, silence, 'where is my phone', wifi on/off, battery charge. I've chatted with Apple who had no answers and the chat after an hour of going in circles dropped out. I am very unhappy with this update, it has complicated my watch and I can't revert.

has anyone else had this problem? I use to be able to click on the watchface, swipe down and there they all were. Now I just get the weather (which I already get on the face, so it's not exactly a great update but an annoying duplication.)

The 10.0.1 OS made some things more complicated. You can not swipe up on the watch face to access Battery Level, Opera, silent or having your phone make a sound to find it by pressing a button. Changing watch faces requires additional steps. I would rather have the old version OS because these are things I use often .

The worst issue I have is that the battery drains to nothing within a matter of hours. Prior to the update I NEVER HAD BATTERY ISSUES. Since the update to watchOS 10 there are nights where I go to bed with 100% power and I wake up 6-7 hours later with it either totally DEAD or dead enough where it will only show the time when pressing a button. So my sleep doesn't get logged. But sometimes under the exact same circumstances I wake up with it at 40%.

There is NOTHING enabled on my watch anymore due to these problems. I keep it on airplane mode ALWAYS. Every time I put it on the charger I put it into low power mode. I have cellular disabled and WIFI off. The volume is turned all the way down. The screen brightness is turned all the way down. And yet it KEEPS only lasting a few hours ever since this update!!!

The other MAJOR problem I am now having is the watch freezes half the time! It randomly wont respond to me touching the screen or side buttons. Even though it's ALWAYS next to my iPhone 13 Pro Max, I'd say at least 75% of the time I hold down the crown side button for a second so SIRI is listening, I then give it a voice command to remind me of something or whatever, it will show what I said on the screen, and then tell me SOMETHING IS WRONG AND IT DOESNT UNDERSTAND!

Use Control Center on Apple Watch explains "Control Center gives you an easy way to check your battery, silence your watch, choose a Focus, turn your Apple Watch into a flashlight, put your Apple Watch in Airplane Mode, turn on theater mode, and more."

Start the pairing process > it should say your watch is now paired > select update > it will give you the update error again saying no internet but let it sit for a minute > boom it will start updating the watch. Headache is GONE hopefully!

Yes, you read that right: structured training for cycling is coming to the Apple Watch. It is unclear as of now who is in on the update, but the Apple keynote showed compatibility with TrainingPeaks. Simply schedule your workout, and then the app (through your phone and watch) takes care of pushing the workout to your watch.

Not everyone is deep into the Apple ecosystem which probably makes these updates fairly pedestrian to you all. But this type of integration is a serious attack on existing smartwatches from Garmin, Wahoo, Suunto, and the like, as well as a viable option for folks who want to ditch their cycling computer.

In the early days of HRMs (the 1980s) when they were all styled as a wristwatch we just wrapped it around a piece of foam pipe insulation on our bars. I think there are some fancier versions of that available now.
