Singur in fata dragostei (Alone in Front of Love) is a novel by Aureliu Busuioc, published in 1966. It is one of the most popular and acclaimed works of Moldovan literature, and has been adapted into a film and a TV series. The novel tells the story of Viorica Vrabie, a young and beautiful teacher who arrives in a rural village to work at a local school. There, she meets Radu Negrescu, a pedagogue and a poet, who falls in love with her. However, their relationship faces many obstacles, such as the jealousy of Spnu, the director of the school, the interference of Pablo, Viorica's former lover, and the social and political turmoil of the 1950s.

The novel Singur in fata dragostei is considered a classic because it depicts realistically and vividly the life and mentality of the Moldovan people in the post-war period. It also explores universal themes such as love, loneliness, education, culture, social and political issues. It has a captivating plot, rich language, memorable characters, and poetic imagery. It appeals to readers of all ages and backgrounds.

The novel begins with Viorica's arrival at the village school. She is greeted by Otilia, an old maid who teaches manual work. She introduces her to Radu Negrescu, who is impressed by her beauty and intelligence. He helps her carry her suitcase to her lodgings at Safta's house. He also invites her to attend the pedagogical council meeting later that day.

At the meeting, Viorica makes a good impression on everyone except Spnu, who is annoyed by her confidence and independence. He tries to intimidate her by asking her difficult questions about her qualifications and methods. However, she answers him calmly and firmly. She also defends one of her students, Lucica, who was accused by Spnu of stealing his wallet. She proves that Lucica was innocent and that Spnu had lied.

The next day, Viorica has her first lesson with her class. She tries to establish a rapport with them by asking them about their interests and hobbies. She also encourages them to read books and magazines that she brought from the city. She notices that some of them are talented and eager to learn.

However, Spnu does not appreciate her efforts. He considers her too modern and progressive for his conservative views. He also resents her popularity among the students and colleagues. He decides to sabotage her work by spreading rumors about her past and character. He also tries to seduce her by sending her flowers and letters.

One day, he goes too far by slapping Lucica in front of the whole class for no reason. Viorica intervenes and slaps him back. She also reports him to the director for his abuse of power. Spnu is furious and vows revenge.

Meanwhile, Viorica and Radu grow closer to each other. They share their passion for literature and culture. They also have similar views on education and society. They spend time together at school events or at Radu's house.

Radu reveals to Viorica that he is married but separated from his wife Lida. He tells her that Lida cheated on him with another man and asked for a divorce. He also confesses that he loves Viorica and wants to be with her.

Viorica feels the same way but she is afraid of committing to him. She tells him that she had a bad experience with Pablo, a Frenchman who was her lover in Bucharest. She says that Pablo was charming but irresponsible and unfaithful. He left her without saying goodbye.

One night, Pablo shows up at Radu's house drunk and wounded. He says that he came back for Viorica because he still loves her. He also says that he was involved in some illegal activities and that he needs money to escape from his enemies.

They find each other as soulmates who can fill their emptiness and heal their wounds. However, their love is not easy or simple. They have to overcome many obstacles such as Spnu's hostility, Pablo's interference, the gossip of the villagers, the pressure of society, and their own fears and doubts. They have to fight for their love and prove its worth and strength. They have to choose between being alone or being in front of love.
